The University of Southampton is seeking a Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow to join its world-renowned WorldPop Group, a leading research team specializing in high-resolution population data modeling. The position is based at the University’s Highfield Campus and offers a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge demographic and geospatial research with global impact. About the WorldPop Group WorldPop is an award-winning, multi-sectoral research team focused on producing detailed population distribution and demographic data at high spatial resolution. Its work supports governments, UN agencies, and global organizations by providing accurate population datasets critical for public health, disaster response, urban planning, and sustainable development. The group employs novel statistical and AI methodologies, integrating diverse data sources including satellite imagery, building footprints, mobile phone data, and social media-derived geospatial datasets. Researchers work collaboratively across disciplines and continents to improve population estimates at national, regional, and global scales. Role Overview The selected candidate will: Develop and implement methods to improve small-area modeled population estimates Work with large gridded geospatial datasets to design and validate modeling approaches Explore urban dynamics, population characteristics, and data integration strategies Collaborate with partners from governments, UN agencies, and technology companies Lead and contribute to projects across the WorldPop portfolio Prepare high-quality research publications and present findings at international conferences The role offers the opportunity to combine research innovation with practical applications, influencing population modeling for policy, health, and humanitarian interventions worldwide. Candidate Requirements Successful applicants are expected to have: Strong quantitative and computational skills Experience with large geospatial datasets and statistical modeling Ability to apply AI and novel statistical methods in population estimation Experience working in multi-disciplinary and international research teams Strong communication skills for publications and stakeholder engagement The University encourages applications from under-represented groups, including Black, Asian, and Minority Ethnic communities, LGBTQ+ individuals, people with disabilities, and applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds.
