Research Fellow Opportunity at the University of Birmingham The position is located within the Intellectual Disabilities Research Institute at the University of Birmingham’s College of Social Sciences. The successful applicant will join the team working on the BEAMS-ID Trial, a National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR)-funded project. The trial is a multicentre, two-arm parallel randomised controlled trial with an internal pilot. It aims to determine the clinical and cost-effectiveness of an adapted psychological therapy designed for people with moderate to severe intellectual disabilities experiencing anxiety disorders. The research is led by Professor Peter Langdon, in collaboration with the Cardiff Centre for Trials Research. The successful Research Fellow will therefore have the opportunity to contribute to research addressing important questions around mental health, intellectual disabilities and access to effective psychological interventions. Key Responsibilities The Research Fellow will be expected to contribute to the planning, design and coordination of the BEAMS-ID Trial, working closely with Cardiff Centre for Trials Research and the Trial Manager. Responsibilities will include analysing and interpreting research findings, capturing data from participants and their families, contributing to research funding applications and working within specified research grants and projects. The successful candidate may also contribute to public understanding of the discipline and, where relevant, licensing or spin-out activities resulting from successful research. The position requires someone capable of coordinating their own work with colleagues, managing research resources effectively and contributing to the wider administration and organisation of research programmes. Eligibility and Academic Requirements Applicants should normally hold a first degree in a relevant area of specialism, together with a higher degree relevant to the research field or equivalent qualifications. Candidates should demonstrate a high level of analytical capability and be able to communicate complex information clearly to different audiences. The University is particularly interested in applicants with substantial experience planning and conducting research and managing projects that deliver high-quality results. Experience of working on clinical trials or other large-scale research projects is particularly important. Knowledge or experience of multi-level or linear mixed-effects modelling, missing-data analysis using multiple imputation, health economics within clinical trials and process evaluation will be highly relevant. Applicants should also have knowledge or experience of using the Mental Capacity Act 2005 within research, as well as experience working with people with intellectual disabilities and their families. Experience of funded clinical trials involving health or social care interventions will also strengthen an application. Skills and Experience Required Beyond academic qualifications, the role requires strong research, analytical and project-management skills. The successful candidate should be able to assess research resource requirements, contribute to developing research methods and coordinate their work effectively with other members of the research team.
