In 2026, that investment will increase to $60 million, reflecting an intensified commitment to advancing systemic change across its program areas, including climate, toxics, ecosystems, and human rights. Role Overview Reporting to the Programs Director, the Climate Program Officer serves as a strategic partner to the existing part-time Climate Program Officer. Together, they share intellectual leadership and ownership of the Climate portfolio. The Climate Program currently manages approximately: 68 grants annually A 2026 budget of $7.1 million (with anticipated growth) A mix of general operating and project-based grants The newly appointed officer will assume primary responsibility for a defined subset of the portfolio, with an initial emphasis on methane reduction and natural gas–related strategies. Climate Program Focus Areas The Climate portfolio prioritizes: Corporate accountability: Encouraging major emitters to align with global climate goals Methane reduction strategies: Utility accountability Reducing natural gas dependence Agricultural methane mitigation Renewable energy transition acceleration Public awareness and narrative change: Supporting investigative journalism Countering climate misinformation Elevating frontline community voices Key Responsibilities Portfolio Leadership & Strategy Develop fluency in prior and current Climate grantmaking strategies Manage a defined portfolio of grants and grantee relationships Identify new funding opportunities aligned with evolving strategy Refine and adapt strategic frameworks in response to policy and political shifts Grantmaking & Committee Engagement Review proposals, conduct due diligence, and assess strategic alignment Prepare funding recommendations and grant dockets (3–4 annually) Present recommendations to the Climate Grant Committee Draft contextual memos that frame strategic pivots and field-level insights Budget & Financial Stewardship Co-develop annual program budgets Manage grant forecasting and allocations Track portfolio performance and strategic metrics Grantee Stewardship & Field Representation Maintain trusted relationships with grantees Provide feedback, serve as a thought partner, and facilitate connections Represent the Foundation in funder collaboratives and climate forums Deliver periodic updates to trustees and executive leadership Organizational Contribution Ensure compliance with private foundation regulations and IRS guidelines Collaborate with the Grants Administrator to streamline processes Participate in organization-wide planning and cross-program learning Support continuous improvement across internal systems Desired Qualifications Strong candidates will demonstrate a combination of intellectual rigor, strategic insight, and collaborative leadership.
