2026 IRES: Nature-based Solutions for Water Security in South Africa The Oklahoma State University, University of Arizona, and University of Denver team is seeking six motivated undergraduate or early graduate students to participate in an international research experience focused on Nature-based Solutions (NbS) for water security in South Africa. This program is supported by a National Science Foundation International Research Experiences for Students (IRES) award (2505548). Program Overview Participants will engage in hands-on research to study the opportunities and challenges of implementing Nature-based Solutions—approaches that use ecological systems to enhance water availability and quality—in the South African context. Students will collaborate with U.S. and South African researchers to explore real-world applications of NbS, while gaining practical experience in environmental science, hydrology, and GIS. All travel, lodging, and food expenses during the fieldwork in South Africa will be fully covered. In addition, students will receive a $3,250 stipend upon completion of the summer research activities. Professional conference registration and associated travel expenses for presenting research post-fieldwork are also supported. Eligibility Applicants must meet the following criteria: U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident Enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program in the U.S. through December 2026 Able to provide a completed application and one faculty letter of recommendation Program Structure and Timeline The IRES program combines virtual training, international fieldwork, and professional development in environmental research: Virtual Training (March 23 – May 1, 2026) Students will receive instruction in techniques relevant to environmental science and NbS, including GIS, hydrology, and ecological assessment methods. Interactive modules will provide foundational skills necessary for field research. Cultural Orientation and International Travel Workshop (May 21 – May 28, 2026) Pre-departure training will familiarize students with South African cultural norms, safety protocols, and international research logistics. Workshops will cover travel planning, field safety, and cross-cultural collaboration. Five-Week Field Project in South Africa (June 4 – July 8, 2026) Participants will work on-site with U.S. and South African researchers to implement NbS research projects. Fieldwork will include data collection, analysis, and application of ecological and hydrological techniques to assess water security challenges and solutions. Students will gain experience in collaborative international research, ecological monitoring, and applied environmental science. Professional Practice and Scientific Communication Training (August 15 – October 15, 2026) Following fieldwork, students will engage in professional development sessions, including training in research communication, data visualization, and presentation skills. Students will also have opportunities to present findings at professional conferences, leveraging skills developed during the program. Benefits and Opportunities Participants will: Receive full support for travel, lodging, and food during fieldwork in South Africa Earn a $3,250 stipend Gain hands-on research experience in environmental science, NbS, and hydrology Develop skills in GIS, data analysis, and field-based ecological research Participate in cross-cultural collaboration and professional development Present research at national or international conferences, supported financially by the program Application Process Applicants must complete the following to be considered: Submit an online application form Provide a personal statement or background statement highlighting interest in NbS and water security research Submit a letter of recommendation from a faculty member Meet all eligibility requirements Applications are due by January 9, 2026. Early submission is encouraged due to limited cohort size. Program Goals The IRES experience aims to: Enhance student understanding of Nature-based Solutions for water security Build practical skills in environmental and ecological research Foster international collaboration and cross-cultural scientific communication Prepare students for future research careers in environmental science and water resource management Through this immersive program, students will contribute to meaningful research that addresses pressing environmental challenges while developing the skills and professional networks necessary for a successful career in global water security and sustainability.
