Ahaki, in partnership with Hivos and Litigating Reproductive Justice in Africa (LIRA), invites applications for an Advanced Short Course on Advocacy for Reproductive Justice in Africa. The course is designed to strengthen the capacity of advocates, policymakers, and practitioners to address structural barriers that limit equitable access to sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) services across the continent. Course Theme Age as a Determinant of Reproductive Justice This year’s course focuses on age as a critical determinant of reproductive justice in Africa. It explores how age-related laws, policies, and cultural norms often restrict adolescents and young people from accessing timely and confidential sexual and reproductive health services. The course is grounded in an Africentric reproductive justice framework that emphasizes: Reclaiming African agency and narratives Challenging colonial and Western epistemic frameworks Promoting structural transformation in reproductive justice advocacy Participants will examine how historical and contemporary legal regimes often conflate consent to sexual activity or marriage with consent to access SRHR services, creating barriers that undermine health outcomes and reproductive autonomy. Course Overview Across many African countries, legal and policy frameworks regulating adolescent access to SRHR services remain shaped by colonial constructions of childhood, morality, and sexuality. These frameworks frequently create ambiguity regarding adolescents’ rights to access healthcare services independently. As a result: Adolescents are often denied confidential and timely reproductive health services Healthcare providers face uncertainty about legal obligations Young people experience preventable negative sexual and reproductive health outcomes Through this advanced course, participants will critically analyze how such barriers persist and explore practical advocacy strategies to address them. Learning Approach The course adopts an equity-centered and justice-oriented learning methodology that encourages collaborative learning and critical reflection. Participants will engage in: Interactive lectures by experts in reproductive justice Storytelling and lived-experience narratives Scenario-based simulations Peer dialogues and group discussions Creative exercises designed to encourage critical thinking These approaches aim to equip participants with both theoretical insight and practical advocacy tools for advancing reproductive justice across Africa. Course Objective The primary objective of the course is to strengthen participants’ ability to apply Africentric reproductive justice principles when advocating for equitable access to sexual and reproductive health and rights services. Specifically, the course seeks to: Build participants’ understanding of age-related barriers to SRHR access Examine how colonial legal frameworks influence current policies Develop advocacy strategies that challenge discriminatory laws and practices Promote justice-oriented approaches to reproductive health policy and programming Target Audience The course is open to a wide range of stakeholders engaged in sexual and reproductive health and rights, governance, law, and social justice. Eligible participants include: Adolescents and young people SRHR advocates and activists Public health practitioners Healthcare professionals Lawyers and legal practitioners Judges and prosecutors Policymakers and government officials Civil society leaders and community organizers Journalists and media practitioners African scholars and researchers Graduate students in law, health, and human rights Representatives of marginalized and underrepresented communities This diversity of participants is intended to foster cross-sector collaboration and shared learning. Methodology and Duration The course will be conducted entirely online over a four-day period. Course Dates:30 March – 2 April 2026 Participants will engage in structured learning sessions designed to combine academic insight with practical advocacy tools. The virtual format allows for broad participation from across Africa and the diaspora, enabling diverse perspectives and experiences to inform the learning process. Application Details Interested applicants are encouraged to apply before the deadline. Application Deadline:16 March 2026 Early applications are encouraged, as spaces for the course may be limited. Why This Course Matters Reproductive justice advocacy across Africa requires approaches that acknowledge the historical, social, and political contexts shaping health systems and legal frameworks. By focusing on age as a determinant of reproductive justice, this course aims to: Highlight structural inequalities affecting young people’s access to SRHR services Strengthen advocacy strategies that center African perspectives and lived realities Equip participants to influence policy, law, and practice within their respective contexts Participants will leave the course with strengthened analytical frameworks, practical advocacy skills, and expanded networks for advancing reproductive justice.
