The AMR Leaders Program for Tertiary Students in Africa is now open for applications for Cohort 4, offering an exciting opportunity for tertiary-level students across Africa who are interested in learning about and contributing to efforts to mitigate Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR). Implemented by ReAct Africa, this programme is a hybrid capacity-building initiative designed to empower young people with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience needed to design and implement sustainable interventions addressing AMR within their institutions and communities. The programme brings together students from diverse academic disciplines to promote multidisciplinary learning, systems thinking, and youth-led solutions to one of the most pressing global public health threats. Programme Overview The AMR Leaders Program targets tertiary-level students currently studying in Africa who demonstrate interest in public health, health systems, environmental health, agriculture, veterinary sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, social sciences, and other related fields. Key features of the programme include: Hybrid delivery combining virtual learning and interactive engagement A systems-based approach to understanding and addressing AMR Structured learning modules delivered between February and May 2026 Facilitation by experienced AMR practitioners, researchers, and advocates Emphasis on co-creation, collaboration, and experiential learning Participants will engage in a range of learning activities designed to build both theoretical knowledge and practical competencies. Learning Approach and Activities The programme will employ a participatory and learner-centred approach, including: Virtual lectures and expert-led webinars Group discussions and peer learning sessions Interactive, problem-solving workshops Constructive engagement and co-creation sessions Experiential learning focused on real-world AMR challenges Opportunities to design context-specific and sustainable AMR interventions This blended approach ensures that participants not only understand the complexity of AMR but are also equipped to translate knowledge into action. Programme Objectives The AMR Leaders Program is designed to achieve the following objectives: 1. Capacity Building for AMR Mitigation Strengthen participants’ understanding of AMR from a systems perspective Equip students with skills to design, implement, and sustain AMR-related interventions Support the establishment of student-led AMR initiatives within tertiary institutions 2. Career Pathways and Leadership Development Stimulate interest and long-term commitment to AMR mitigation Increase awareness and prioritisation of AMR-related career pathways Foster the emergence of AMR champions across diverse academic disciplines 3. Youth Engagement and Advocacy Amplify youth voices in AMR mitigation efforts at national, regional, and global levels Promote multidisciplinary collaboration and collective action Strengthen networks among young leaders working on AMR across Africa Eligibility Criteria Applicants must meet the following requirements: Be currently enrolled as a tertiary-level student in an African institution Demonstrate interest in learning about AMR and contributing to mitigation efforts Be willing to actively participate in all programme activities over the full duration Commit to collaborative learning and ethical engagement Have access to stable internet for virtual sessions Students from all disciplines are encouraged to apply, reflecting the programme’s commitment to a One Health and systems-based approach to AMR.
