globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

May 24, 2026

Description

The Anthropic STEM Fellows Program is offered by Anthropic, a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. The organisation focuses on developing reliable, interpretable, and steerable artificial intelligence systems that are safe and beneficial for society. Anthropic brings together researchers, engineers, and policy experts to advance AI systems capable of supporting scientific discovery and solving complex global challenges. Programme Overview The STEM Fellows Program is designed to bring scientists, engineers, and domain experts into Anthropic’s research environment for a short-term, high-impact collaboration. The programme contributes to Anthropic’s long-term vision of building an AI scientist—a system capable of: Long-horizon reasoning Experimental judgement Scientific discovery across disciplines Fellows work directly with Anthropic’s research teams, combining domain expertise with advanced AI tools such as Claude to evaluate, improve, and apply AI capabilities in real-world scientific contexts. Programme Structure The fellowship is a full-time, in-person programme based in San Francisco, USA, with the following structure: Duration: June 15 – September 15 (approximately 3 months) Extension: Possible for selected fellows Commitment: Full-time engagement Compensation: Approximately $3,800 per week stipend Work Authorisation: Required for the United States Participants also gain access to Anthropic’s offices, tools, and research community. What Fellows Can Expect Participants in the programme benefit from: A defined research project aligned with their expertise Direct mentorship from Anthropic researchers Access to frontier AI models such as Claude Use of internal evaluation and research tools Collaboration with a cohort of fellows and the broader research team The programme emphasises practical outcomes, with projects scoped to deliver results within the fellowship period. Key Areas of Work Fellows contribute to advancing AI capabilities in scientific domains through: Evaluation and Testing Designing rigorous evaluation frameworks Testing AI systems’ ability to reason, interpret data, and plan experiments Identifying failure points and areas where models produce incorrect outputs Data and Capability Development Creating or identifying datasets to improve AI performance Developing techniques to address gaps in reasoning or domain knowledge Applied Research Applying AI tools to real-world scientific challenges Integrating domain-specific software and modelling tools Exploring innovative uses of AI in areas such as climate science, materials science, and engineering Example projects may include improving AI reasoning in materials science or integrating atmospheric modelling tools in climate research workflows. Ideal Candidate Profile The programme targets highly skilled individuals with strong scientific backgrounds. Ideal candidates typically: Hold or are completing a PhD in a STEM field, or have equivalent research experience Demonstrate strong analytical and scientific reasoning skills Are interested in the role of AI in accelerating scientific discovery Are comfortable working in fast-paced, research-driven environments Show willingness to learn and adapt quickly While experience in machine learning is beneficial, it is not mandatory. Domain expertise and scientific judgement are prioritised. Additional Preferred Skills Strong candidates may also have: Experience using AI tools such as Claude or similar systems Familiarity with computational or data-driven research methods Experience integrating software tools into scientific workflows Interest in interdisciplinary research Application Process Candidates must complete a multi-stage selection process: Submit an online application Complete an initial technical assessment Undertake a take-home exercise Participate in a discussion with a mentor regarding research interests Application Deadline: May 15, 2026Final Decisions: Expected by June 1, 2026 Applicants are encouraged to apply even if they do not meet every listed requirement. Diversity and Inclusion Anthropic promotes diversity and inclusion within its programmes. The organisation actively encourages applications from individuals from underrepresented groups and emphasises the importance of diverse perspectives in shaping the future of AI. The company also highlights awareness of imposter syndrome and encourages candidates not to self-select out of the application process. Research Environment and Culture Anthropic operates as a collaborative, research-driven organisation that treats AI development as an empirical science. Its work draws from disciplines such as: Physics Biology Computer science The organisation focuses on large-scale, high-impact research projects rather than isolated technical challenges. Communication, collaboration, and scientific curiosity are key values within the team. Safety and Recruitment Notice Applicants are advised that legitimate recruitment communication from Anthropic will only come from official email domains. The organisation does not request payment or financial information during the recruitment process. Conclusion The Anthropic STEM Fellows Program offers a unique opportunity for scientists and engineers to collaborate with leading AI researchers on cutting-edge projects. By combining domain expertise with advanced AI systems, fellows contribute to shaping the future of scientific discovery and responsible AI development.
