Applicants must: Hold a PhD or equivalent professional experience Demonstrate a proven record of research and publications Be affiliated with a university, research institution, or cultural organization Be based either in Australia (excluding ANU) or internationally The program does not accept: Independent scholars without institutional affiliation Students currently pursuing their higher degree CIW emphasizes equity, diversity, and equal opportunity, ensuring fair consideration for all qualified applicants. Fellowship Duration and Deadlines The program operates on a biannual application cycle, with specific timelines for different fellowship periods: April 15, 2026 (11:59 PM AEST): For fellowships between June–December 2026 October 15, 2026 (11:59 PM AEDT): For fellowships between February–July 2027 Duration details: Minimum stay: 4 weeks Maximum stay: 8 weeks Shorter visits may be considered under exceptional circumstances with strong justification Fellows are expected to remain full-time in residence at ANU for the entire duration of their fellowship. Value and Benefits The CIW Visiting Fellowship provides essential academic and logistical support, including: Travel Funding: Coverage for the most direct economy-class airfare Accommodation Support: Subsidized housing in Canberra (preferred ANU accommodation at approximately 120 AUD per day, subject to availability) Office Space: Dedicated workspace with computing and printing facilities Library Access: Full borrowing privileges at ANU Library Campus Access: Entry to ANU events, seminars, and academic resources While these benefits cover major academic expenses, fellows are expected to secure additional funding to support personal living costs. Importantly, fellowship funds cannot be used for accompanying family members or dependents. Expectations and Responsibilities Visiting Fellows are expected to actively contribute to the academic environment at CIW and ANU. Key expectations include: Delivering a public research presentation as part of the CIW seminar series Participating in a graduate seminar or Master Class Engaging in scholarly discussions and collaborations Contributing to the broader academic community Fellows are also encouraged to: Present at other Australian research institutions Participate in public lectures and outreach activities Application and Assessment Process Applications must be submitted online and include the following documents: Curriculum Vitae (CV): Maximum of 2 pages Research Statement: Outline of visit purpose, research plans, expected outcomes, and benefits to CIW and ANU (maximum 2 pages) Letter of Support: From an ANU academic sponsor (maximum 1 page) Additional requirements: Applicants must secure sponsorship from a CIW or ANU-affiliated expert All documents must be submitted before the deadline; incomplete applications are not considered Applications are evaluated through a competitive selection process based on: Academic merit and research track record Relevance and significance of the proposed research Potential contribution to CIW and ANU Level of engagement with the academic community Availability of supplementary funding Fellowship Conditions Selected fellows must adhere to several conditions: Obtain appropriate visa and travel insurance Secure institutional approval from their home organization Begin the fellowship within the approved timeframe Participate fully in ANU’s academic environment Submit a final report within two months of completion Failure to commence the fellowship within three months of the approved end date may result in withdrawal of the funding offer.
