The National Law School of India University (National Law School of India University), Bengaluru, has announced a call for applications for the position of Archivist under the Queer Archive for Memory, Reflection and Activism (QAMRA) project. The position is based on the NLSIU campus in Bengaluru and is initially offered for a duration of one year, with the possibility of extension for an additional year based on performance. The role is part of a broader academic and socio-legal initiative focused on documenting and preserving the lived experiences of gender and sexuality-diverse communities in India. About the QAMRA Project The Queer Archive for Memory, Reflection and Activism (QAMRA) is a physical and multimedia archival initiative hosted at NLSIU, Bengaluru. It is dedicated to preserving narratives of individuals and communities marginalised on the basis of gender identity and sexual orientation in India. Key aspects of the project include: Archival preservation of queer histories and lived experiences Research and academic engagement on gender and sexuality Public outreach and awareness initiatives Development of multimedia archival collections The project is guided academically by Dr. Siddharth Narrain, who serves as the Faculty Director. Role of the Archivist The Archivist will play a central role in developing and maintaining archival systems and workflows within the QAMRA project. The position requires engagement with both physical and digital archival materials and contributes directly to research and public-facing initiatives. Core responsibilities include: Developing and supporting end-to-end archival workflows such as: Acquisition of materials Sorting and arrangement Cataloguing and classification Curation of archival content Digitisation of records and materials Working with diverse formats including: Multimedia records Digital archives Textual and visual materials Supporting research-related activities by: Organising and categorising archival materials Assisting in thematic research documentation Contributing to public engagement efforts, including: Designing posters and communication materials Managing and updating social media platforms Supporting outreach initiatives Facilitating access to archival resources for researchers, scholars, and visitors Assisting the project coordinator and chief archivist as required Required Qualifications and Skills The position requires a combination of academic qualifications, technical skills, and interest in archival and socio-legal work. Essential Requirements A Bachelor’s degree from a recognised university Minimum of two years of post-qualification work experience Desirable Skills and Attributes Strong written communication skills in English Proficiency in Kannada and/or Tamil (reading and writing preferred) Computer literacy, including spreadsheet software such as Excel or equivalent tools Ability to work independently and demonstrate initiative Strong organisational and reporting skills Demonstrated interest or involvement in queer movements or related social issues Prior archival experience is considered an advantage but is not mandatory. Reporting Structure and Compensation The Archivist will report directly to: The Chief Archivist The Faculty Director of QAMRA Compensation will be based on experience and is structured in the range of: INR 40,000 to INR 50,000 per month The role offers both academic exposure and practical experience in archival science, particularly in the context of socio-legal and community-based documentation.
