The rapid advancement of artificial intelligence continues to transform industries, economies, and societies across the world. As AI systems become increasingly influential, the need for diverse leadership and ethical oversight in AI safety, governance, and security has never been greater. Black in AI Safety and Ethics (BASE) is addressing this challenge through the launch of the BASE Fellows Fall 2026 program, a transformative initiative dedicated to increasing Black representation and leadership in the global AI ecosystem. BASE exists to create opportunities for Black researchers, professionals, and students to actively shape the future of artificial intelligence. The organization is committed to building a connected global community that educates, empowers, and supports Black talent in developing safe, equitable, and human-centered AI systems. Through this mission, BASE seeks to prevent the gradual disempowerment of the Black diaspora in the age of artificial intelligence. What is the BASE Fellowship? The BASE Fellowship is a 13-week remote and part-time program scheduled to run from September 2026 through December 2026. The fellowship is designed to equip participants with the skills, mentorship, and practical experience needed to excel in AI Safety, AI Security, and AI Governance. The program focuses on preparing future leaders and researchers for impactful contributions within the rapidly evolving AI safety ecosystem. Fellows will receive direct guidance from experts in the field while participating in structured training and hands-on research projects. Key benefits of the fellowship include: Structured expert mentorship Foundational AI safety training Research collaboration opportunities Exposure to AI governance and security frameworks Access to a global network of professionals and researchers Career development support in emerging AI disciplines By combining academic learning with practical research experience, BASE aims to create a pipeline of highly skilled Black leaders capable of influencing the future direction of artificial intelligence. Building Equity in Artificial Intelligence Artificial intelligence systems have the potential to influence healthcare, education, finance, employment, and public policy. However, without diverse voices participating in their development and governance, these technologies risk reinforcing existing inequalities and biases. BASE recognizes the importance of ensuring that Black communities are represented in conversations surrounding AI ethics, governance, and safety. The fellowship serves as a platform for developing leaders who can advocate for fairness, accountability, and collective well-being within AI systems. The organization’s long-term mission includes: Increasing Black representation in AI research and policy Strengthening leadership within AI safety and governance Creating inclusive and equitable AI systems Supporting interdisciplinary collaboration Building sustainable networks within the Black diaspora Through initiatives like the BASE Fellowship, participants are empowered to contribute meaningfully to one of the most important technological conversations of the modern era.
