Data Science Africa (DSA) is proud to announce the 2026 Summer School, a comprehensive three-day program designed to equip students and early-career researchers with both practical skills and theoretical knowledge in modern data science. This annual initiative provides a unique platform for emerging data scientists to gain hands-on experience and deepen their understanding of advanced concepts in a collaborative environment. The Summer School emphasizes applied learning, fostering a balance between core theory, practical exercises, and project-based learning. Participants will explore cutting-edge topics relevant to African and global contexts, ensuring they are well-prepared for future research, industry, and policy roles in data science. Core Topics Covered The 2026 Summer School curriculum includes a range of foundational and advanced subjects, ensuring participants acquire diverse skills applicable to real-world data challenges. Key topics include: Python for Data Science – Building programming proficiency for data analysis and scientific computing. Data Storytelling and Visualization – Techniques for effectively communicating insights from complex datasets. Machine Learning Fundamentals – Introduction to supervised, unsupervised, and reinforcement learning algorithms. Ethics and Responsible AI – Addressing fairness, accountability, and transparency in AI systems. Hands-On Projects – Working with real-world datasets to apply learned techniques. Agentic AI and Multi-Agent Systems – Exploring autonomous decision-making systems and collaborative AI agents. Multimodal AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) – Understanding AI that integrates multiple data types, including text, images, and audio. AI on the Edge and Resource-Constrained Environments – Techniques for deploying AI models in low-resource settings. Natural Language Processing (NLP) and African Language Models – Advancing AI solutions for regional languages and cultural contexts. Explainable AI and Model Interpretability – Ensuring machine learning models are understandable, interpretable, and trustworthy. Target Audience The program is designed for undergraduate students, graduate students, researchers, and professionals who are actively working with large-scale or unique datasets. A strong foundation in mathematics, statistics, computer science, engineering, or related fields is essential. By attending, participants will enhance both their technical competence and critical thinking in the field of data science. Application Process To join the Summer School, participants are required to register online and complete a short quiz tailored for beginners. The steps are as follows: Download the registration package and review the instructions carefully. Complete the exercises included in the zipped file. Submit the completed exercises by uploading the file through the registration portal. Attention to detail in following the instructions is crucial for successful application submission.
