The Digital Energy Challenge 2026, led by Agence Française de Développement, is a funding and support programme designed to scale innovative digital energy solutions across Africa. Programme Categories Applicants may apply to one or both of the following categories: Tech AcceleratorDesigned for innovative digital projects operating in any of the 51 eligible African countries. Partnership CategoryFocused on collaborative projects implemented in Nigeria in partnership with Abuja Electricity Distribution Company. Nigeria is highlighted as a high-impact environment for innovation, with approximately 90 million people lacking reliable electricity. This creates a unique opportunity for: Real-world testing of solutions Demonstrating scalability and resilience Advancing research and development (R&D) Developing models that can be replicated across Africa Funding and Support Structure The Digital Energy Challenge provides both financial and technical support to selected projects. A total budget of €827,000 has been allocated for the 2026 call. Successful applicants will benefit from: Grant Funding: Up to €400,000 for Partnership projects Up to €150,000 for Tech Accelerator projects Eligible Expenses Coverage: Equipment and software Product and service development Training and capacity building Technical and Strategic Support: Access to expert guidance in project management Participation in a dedicated bootcamp Sector insights and collaboration opportunities Visibility and Networking: Inclusion in communication campaigns Access to the Digital Energy Community Opportunities to engage with African energy utilities This combination of funding and mentorship is designed to ensure that selected projects are both impactful and scalable. Key Dates and Timeline Applicants must adhere to the following timeline: 20 April 2026 – Call for projects opens 5 May 2026 – Information webinar 17 June 2026 (23:59 CET) – Application deadline Autumn 2026 – Selection results and bootcamp Early preparation is strongly encouraged to ensure a complete and competitive application. Thematic Focus Areas The challenge is structured around three priority themes that address key issues faced by African energy utilities: Grid Planning and Investment Optimization Microgrid and Distributed Energy Resource (DER) Management Data Platforms and Integrated Network Visibility Application requirements differ by category: Partnership Category: May cover one or multiple themes Preference given to proposals addressing all three Tech Accelerator Category: Must focus on one theme only These themes are aligned with improving infrastructure planning, integrating decentralised energy systems, and enhancing operational efficiency. Eligibility Criteria for Applicants The programme is open to innovative SMEs that meet the following criteria: Employ fewer than 250 people Have an annual turnover below €50 million Operate independently (ownership criteria apply) Demonstrate a strong research and development component Have no conflict of interest with AEDC While global applications are accepted, African-based companies are strongly encouraged and may receive favourable consideration. Project Eligibility Requirements To qualify, proposed projects must meet the following conditions: Be digital in nature (e.g., software, cloud systems, telecom solutions) Demonstrate innovation, either new or adapted to local contexts Include a clear R&D component Address one or more of the 2026 thematic priorities Be beyond the ideation phase (already piloted) Be implementable within 12 months Not rely on regulatory changes for execution Additional requirements include: Tech Accelerator: Project must be implemented in an eligible African country Partnership: Project must be implemented in Nigeria with AEDC Geographic Scope The challenge supports projects across 51 African countries, including major markets such as: Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, Egypt Zimbabwe, Zambia, Tanzania, Uganda Morocco, Senegal, Ethiopia, and others This broad geographic scope ensures that solutions can be tested and scaled across diverse energy environments.
