The Micro-project scheme is part of Germany’s development co-operation efforts aimed at supporting marginalized and impoverished communities or communities in transition. Each year, the German Missions provide special funding for short-term, high-impact projects that contribute to poverty alleviation, improve living standards, and address basic needs — particularly in rural areas. Deadline: November 30, 2025Submit applications to: General: microprojects@pret.diplo.de Northern, Eastern, Western Cape: ez-s@kaps.diplo.de The scheme is designed to provide quick, targeted support where no other funding is available from government institutions, cooperating partners, or civil society organizations. Funding is limited to projects completed within the calendar year in which the grant agreement is signed; funds cannot be carried over to the following year. Each project may receive up to EUR 25,000, with the applicant organization expected to contribute financially or via in-kind efforts (e.g., labor). Priority Sectors and Regions Micro-project funding focuses on initiatives that advance one or more of the following objectives: Just Energy Transition: Renewable energy, solar installations, or other sustainable energy solutions. Local Economic Development & Alternative Livelihoods: Especially in communities affected by fossil fuel phase-outs or small-scale farming. Women’s Rights and Gender Equality: Access to education, healthcare, resources, and representation. Anti-discrimination: Efforts promoting equality, non-discrimination based on gender, sexual orientation, or physical abilities. Applications from Mpumalanga and Limpopo will receive enhanced consideration. Projects in the Eastern, Northern, and Western Cape should be submitted directly to the Consulate General in Cape Town. Eligibility Eligible applicants include: Registered civil society organizations, NGOs, NPOs, faith-based organizations, or foundations based in South Africa, Eswatini, or Lesotho. Organizations carrying out projects that cannot be funded by their own resources. Projects must be self-contained, without recurring obligations for the German Mission (e.g., ongoing salaries or recurring purchases). Ineligible projects include: Vehicles or private business start-ups. Administrative costs, ongoing operational costs, travel expenses, stipends, or consumer goods (food, medicine, airtime, data). Projects already in progress. Projects supporting government agencies, businesses, or individuals. Eligible Project Examples Projects may include, but are not limited to: Renewable energy solutions (e.g., solar panels) Boreholes or water access initiatives Garden or agricultural projects Shelters for vulnerable children Construction or renovation of classrooms Income-generating equipment (sewing machines, tools, machinery) Important considerations: Personnel costs should generally not exceed 25% of total project costs. Payment of funds may be split into installments; lump-sum payments require special approval. Applicants must agree to the publication of project data on social media. Application Documents Applications must include the following: 1. Completed Application Form Signed and dated by two responsible persons from the organization Project title, amount requested, and organizational contact details (address, phone, email) Detailed project information: Project location (if different from organization’s address) Problem statement and current situation Efforts undertaken to realize the project so far Development policy objectives Planned measures and actions Own contributions (financial or labor) Estimated project timeframe (must be completed within the year) Declaration of any potential follow-up costs 2. Supporting Documents Detailed budget/finance plan (Appendix A – Finance Plan) Three independent quotations for materials and services Excel sheet comparing costs from quotations (“Compared quotes”) Example instalment plan (“Example instalment”) Proof of legal registration of the organization Financial statements Tax clearance certificate Certificate of Non-Profit Registration Copies of official IDs for the two responsible signatories Proof of land ownership or long-term rental (>5 years) for project site If children are involved: valid Form 30 for all personnel in contact with children Project Approval and Oversight Site Visit: Before approval, a representative of the German Mission will visit the project site. Contract Signing: Funds are only released after signing the grant agreement by the Mission and the two responsible project representatives. Post-Completion: Upon completion, the organization must submit: Proof of fund usage Written project report List of expenses with original invoicesUnused or misused funds must be refunded. The Mission will conduct a final site visit to assess impact and ensure proper fund use. Submission Deadline All applications and supporting documents must be received by November 30, 2025. Provide transparent cost estimates and evidence of financial responsibility. Highlight organizational capacity and commitment to accountability. Ensure all supporting documents are complete and accurate. Due to limited funding, only a small number of projects can be supported. Well-prepared applications that demonstrate impact, transparency, and feasibility are more likely to be approved.
