Binghamton University, State University of New York (SUNY), is inviting applications for a full-time Lecturer in Africana Studies for its Department of Africana Studies in Harpur College. The position will begin in Fall 2027 and offers an appointment of up to three years, with the possibility of renewal. Position Details The Lecturer in Africana Studies will be based at Binghamton University in Binghamton, New York, USA. This is a full-time faculty position with an appointment of up to three years, subject to possible renewal. The selected lecturer will teach three undergraduate courses per semester, including multiple sections of the Introduction to Africana Studies. Teaching will include both large lecture-format general education courses and smaller discussion-based classes. The position is scheduled to begin in Fall 2027. Teaching Responsibilities The lecturer will teach Introduction to Africana Studies with an emphasis on Black history and social movements, particularly Black Nationalism, Pan-Africanism and social justice. Binghamton University is seeking candidates who have demonstrated experience teaching Black history and social justice and who are interested in developing effective approaches to university-level teaching. Applicants with experience in transnational and intercultural teaching contexts are particularly encouraged to apply. Knowledge of developments in Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism is also of interest. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to an academic environment that promotes diversity and incorporates perspectives that have historically been underrepresented in higher education. Eligibility and Required Qualifications Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Africana Studies or a related field by August 16, 2027. Candidates must also demonstrate: Experience teaching undergraduate students Experience or the ability to teach historical and contemporary issues in Black studies and social movements Academic preparation relevant to Africana Studies and its interdisciplinary areas Preferred Qualifications The university will give particular consideration to candidates who have experience with: Undergraduate pedagogy or student mentoring Teaching courses focused on social justice Outreach and collaboration across academic departments and disciplines Transnational and intercultural teaching Black Nationalism and Pan-Africanism Candidates who can demonstrate a strong commitment to effective undergraduate teaching and inclusive academic environments may be well aligned with the position.
