Description

The Lise Meitner Programme (LMP), organised by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), offers a specialised professional visit designed to provide participants with practical exposure to the nuclear fuel cycle. The programme combines technical learning, site visits, and international collaboration to strengthen expertise in sustainable nuclear energy. The 2026 visit is structured over two weeks, taking place in both France and Austria. It includes: One week at Orano facilities in France (5–9 October 2026) One week at International Atomic Energy Agency Headquarters in Vienna (12–16 October 2026) Participation in the IAEA International Conference on Fuel Supply Chain for Sustainable Nuclear Power Development This dual-location format enables participants to gain both operational and policy-level perspectives on nuclear energy systems. Experiential Learning and Site Visits Participants are given a rare opportunity to observe the full nuclear fuel cycle through direct engagement with advanced industrial facilities. The programme includes guided visits to state-of-the-art sites operated by Orano across France. Key areas of exposure include: Uranium conversion and enrichment plants Spent fuel storage and transportation facilities Reprocessing and recycling installations These visits provide insight into the scale, complexity, and technological sophistication of modern nuclear operations. Participants also interact with industry experts, gaining knowledge of: Real-world operational practices Safety and regulatory standards Emerging technologies in nuclear fuel management Focus on Sustainability and Circular Economy A central theme of the programme is the role of the nuclear fuel supply chain in advancing sustainable energy systems. Participants explore how circular economy principles are applied within the nuclear sector to: Minimise waste generation Reuse and recycle nuclear materials Preserve natural resources Enhance long-term energy sustainability The programme highlights how responsible fuel cycle management can reduce environmental impact while maintaining energy security. It also addresses societal expectations around waste reduction and environmental stewardship. Conference Participation and Knowledge Exchange During the second week, participants attend a major international conference hosted by the International Atomic Energy Agency. This forum facilitates global dialogue on: Achievements and innovations in the nuclear fuel supply chain Key challenges and lessons learned Future prospects for sustainable nuclear power The conference provides a platform for participants to engage with policymakers, researchers, and industry leaders. It also encourages the exchange of ideas on how best practices can be adapted to different national contexts. Application of Knowledge and Leadership Development The programme is designed not only to transfer technical knowledge but also to support professional growth. Participants are encouraged to consider how insights gained can be applied within their own countries, particularly in: Developing or improving nuclear power programmes Integrating circular economy approaches Strengthening resource management strategies Supporting industrial and technological development In addition, the programme includes sessions focused on leadership development, equipping participants with the skills needed to take on influential roles in the nuclear sector.
