The Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria invites applications for a 24-month Post-Doctoral Researcher position to join a cutting-edge, multi-country research initiative on gender-inclusive climate change governance. This project is part of the UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship, hosted in collaboration with the University of Bradford, and seeks to explore innovative ways to integrate gender justice into climate and environmental policy frameworks. We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled researcher with a strong interdisciplinary background, a passion for gender and climate justice, and the ability to translate research into impactful policy and community-level outcomes. Who we are looking for We are seeking an enthusiastic, self-driven researcher with: A PhD in Law, Sociology, Gender Studies, Climate/Environmental Governance, or a closely related field. Proven research and policy analysis skills, with the ability to design, implement, and disseminate high-quality research. Experience engaging with communities and stakeholders, ensuring that research outputs are grounded in real-world contexts. Strong publication record or capacity to produce high-quality academic and non-academic outputs, including policy briefs, reports, and practical tools. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a diverse, interdisciplinary, and international research team. The successful candidate will combine a deep understanding of gender and climate justice with the practical skills to engage communities, stakeholders, and policymakers in meaningful ways. Role and Responsibilities As a Post-Doctoral Researcher, you will play a pivotal role in the project’s success, working across multiple countries and contexts. Key responsibilities include: Multidisciplinary Research Conduct in-depth research on climate justice for women, exploring legal, social, and governance dimensions. Analyze policies, frameworks, and practices to identify gaps and opportunities for gender inclusion in climate governance. Apply a comparative and interdisciplinary lens to research design, ensuring findings are relevant across diverse contexts. Community-Engaged Research Lead studies that engage directly with local communities and stakeholders, ensuring that research is participatory and inclusive. Build relationships with civil society organizations, community leaders, and relevant governmental actors to inform research outputs. Support capacity-building efforts and co-create tools or resources that empower communities to engage with climate governance. Policy and Practice Development Develop policy instruments, guidelines, and recommendations that support gender-inclusive climate governance. Collaborate with project partners to translate research findings into actionable strategies for local, national, and international policy contexts. Contribute to capacity-building resources, workshops, and training materials aimed at policymakers and practitioners. Knowledge Dissemination Publish research outputs in peer-reviewed journals, policy briefs, and other academic and non-academic platforms. Present research findings at conferences, workshops, and stakeholder events to enhance visibility and impact. Actively contribute to the project’s communications and outreach strategy, ensuring findings reach diverse audiences. Project Support Assist with project governance, coordination, and reporting. Contribute to data management, monitoring, and evaluation processes. Support stakeholder engagement, including organizing workshops, consultations, and collaborative initiatives.
