The programme is designed to support financially deserving matriculants who have demonstrated strong academic performance and intend to pursue undergraduate studies in fields aligned with the insurance and financial services sector. As South Africa’s state-owned specialist insurer, Sasria provides cover for special risks such as civil unrest and public disorder—risks typically excluded from standard commercial insurance policies. Through its bursary scheme, the organisation invests in developing future professionals in high-demand economic sectors. What Is the Sasria Bursary Scheme? The Sasria Bursary Scheme forms part of the company’s corporate social investment and skills development mandate. It aims to: Improve access to higher education for financially constrained students Develop scarce and critical skills in the financial services sector Support transformation and youth empowerment in South Africa The bursary focuses on building capacity in disciplines directly linked to insurance, finance, risk management, and technology. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must meet all of the following criteria to qualify: Must be a South African citizen with a valid South African ID Must be between 16 and 20 years old Must have completed Grade 12 (Matric) Must have achieved a minimum average of 70% in Matric Must have studied Mathematics (Mathematical Literacy is not accepted) Household income must not exceed R600,000 per annum Must not be related to any current Sasria employee The matric average is calculated by adding all subject percentages and dividing by the total number of subjects. Failure to meet any of the above criteria will result in disqualification. Fields of Study Funded The bursary supports undergraduate degrees in the following areas: Insurance or Risk Management Mathematics or Statistics Finance Accounting or Economics Computer Science or Information Technology Applicants must intend to study at a recognised South African university or university of technology. Eligible institutions include, among others: University of Cape Town University of the Witwatersrand University of Pretoria Stellenbosch University University of KwaZulu-Natal University of Johannesburg Tshwane University of Technology Cape Peninsula University of Technology The programme spans institutions across all nine provinces. Full vs Partial Bursary Applicants must indicate whether they are applying for: Full Bursary – Covers the full scope of approved funding Partial Bursary – Covers specific costs such as tuition or accommodation Applicants seeking partial support must clearly specify their financial needs. This distinction allows Sasria to allocate funding effectively based on individual circumstances. Required Supporting Documents All documents must be certified and not older than three months at the time of submission. Applicants must prepare: Certified copy of South African ID Proof of residence Certified copy of latest Grade 12 results Parent or guardian ID copies Proof of income or affidavit if unemployed Self-employment affidavit and three months’ bank statements (if applicable) Death certificate (if parent deceased) Affidavit confirming independent living (if applicable) Each uploaded file must not exceed 8 MB. Incomplete or improperly certified documentation will result in disqualification. How to Apply Applications are submitted online through the official Sasria website. The application process includes six sections: Eligibility screening Personal and student details Academic information and intended field of study Parent or guardian details Financial information Short survey Applicants must consent to Sasria’s Privacy Policy and comply with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) requirements before proceeding. The online system allows applicants to save progress and return later to complete the form.
