The UNESCO Youth Climate Action Network (YoU-CAN) invites youth-led organizations and networks actively engaged in climate change action to apply for membership in its Steering Committee. This call aims to strengthen youth leadership, coordination, and impact within UNESCO’s climate-related initiatives by appointing committed and diverse representatives for the 2026–2027 term. YoU-CAN serves as a global platform that empowers young people to contribute meaningfully to climate action across UNESCO’s mandate areas, including education, science, culture, and information. The Steering Committee plays a central role in guiding the strategic direction, governance, and implementation of the network’s activities at global and regional levels. Composition and Mandate of the Steering Committee The YoU-CAN Steering Committee is composed of 15 members in total. Through this call for applications, 8 positions are open to be filled for a two-year term (2026–2027), in accordance with the established Terms of Reference and application procedures. The Steering Committee is responsible for: Providing strategic guidance to the YoU-CAN network Ensuring alignment with UNESCO’s priorities and frameworks Facilitating coordination between youth networks and the UNESCO Secretariat Supporting the design, implementation, and monitoring of YoU-CAN activities Promoting inclusive, regional, and thematic representation within climate action efforts Members of the Steering Committee are expected to demonstrate leadership, collaboration, accountability, and a strong commitment to youth-driven climate solutions. Leadership Roles: Coordinator and Deputy Coordinator Two senior leadership positions are available within the Steering Committee structure: Main Coordinator Deputy Coordinator These roles jointly lead the overall progress and strategic direction of YoU-CAN. They serve as the primary focal points for the Steering Committee and are responsible for maintaining effective communication and collaboration with the UNESCO Secretariat. Key responsibilities include: Coordinating the work of the Steering Committee Representing YoU-CAN in official engagements and consultations Overseeing the implementation of agreed activities and priorities Ensuring continuity, coherence, and transparency in decision-making Supporting collaboration across thematic and regional coordinators The Coordinator and Deputy Coordinator are expected to work closely together to ensure effective leadership and continuity throughout the mandate period. Thematic Coordination Roles Four thematic coordinator positions are available, reflecting UNESCO’s core areas of expertise. These roles focus on facilitating collaboration between the Steering Committee and the UNESCO Secretariat in the development and implementation of thematic YoU-CAN activities. Available thematic coordinator roles include: Sciences Coordinator Education Coordinator Culture Coordinator Information Coordinator Thematic Coordinators are responsible for: Supporting the design and implementation of activities within their thematic area Acting as facilitators between youth networks and UNESCO technical teams Reporting on progress, challenges, and outcomes to the Steering Committee Ensuring that youth perspectives are integrated into thematic climate initiatives Promoting interdisciplinary approaches to climate action These roles are ideal for organizations with demonstrated expertise and experience in one or more of UNESCO’s thematic domains. Regional Coordination Roles To ensure geographical balance and regional representation, three Regional Coordinator positions are available: Latin America and the Caribbean Coordinator Asia and the Pacific Coordinator Europe and North America Coordinator Regional Coordinators play a critical role in amplifying regional voices and strengthening engagement among youth-led climate organizations within their respective regions. Core responsibilities include: Coordinating regional youth networks and initiatives Facilitating information-sharing between regions and the Steering Committee Identifying regional priorities, challenges, and opportunities related to climate action Supporting inclusive participation of diverse youth stakeholders Reporting regional activities and insights to the Steering Committee These roles contribute to ensuring that YoU-CAN reflects regional diversity while maintaining a cohesive global vision. Eligibility and Application Focus This call is addressed exclusively to youth-led organizations and networks actively working in the field of climate change. Applicants should demonstrate: A strong track record in youth engagement and climate action Alignment with UNESCO’s values and mandate Capacity to contribute time, expertise, and coordination efforts Commitment to collaboration, inclusivity, and accountability Selected representatives will be expected to actively participate in Steering Committee meetings and contribute to the network’s strategic and operational activities throughout the two-year term.
