The Tarbell Fellowship 2027 is a one-year journalism fellowship for talented journalists and emerging reporters interested in covering artificial intelligence and its growing impact on society. The programme, organised by the Tarbell Center for AI Journalism, combines intensive training, a newsroom placement and professional development opportunities designed to help fellows build careers in AI journalism. The fellowship is particularly relevant to applicants who are passionate about journalism, have a strong interest in artificial intelligence and can produce compelling, accurate and timely reporting. Candidates do not necessarily need previous professional newsroom experience or a university degree, making the programme accessible to talented journalists from diverse backgrounds. Fellowship Benefits Successful fellows receive a fully supported pathway into AI journalism, including a nine-month placement at a major newsroom. Previous Tarbell placements have included organisations such as Bloomberg, The Guardian, MIT Technology Review, TIME, NPR, The Verge and other prominent media outlets. Fellows receive a stipend of approximately US$60,000 to US$80,000, depending on the location of their placement. Candidates with more than five years of full-time experience in journalism or AI may qualify for Senior Fellowship positions, which provide stipends of approximately US$90,000 to US$110,000, depending on location. The programme also includes a 10-week AI Journalism Fundamentals course delivered remotely. The training provides fellows with a structured curriculum, guest lectures, assignments and practical preparation for reporting on artificial intelligence. In addition, fellows participate in a weeklong Fellowship Summit in the San Francisco Bay Area. Travel and accommodation costs for the summit are covered by Tarbell. Eligibility and Who Should Apply The Tarbell Fellowship is designed for rising journalism talent from around the world. Applicants should demonstrate a strong commitment to journalism and an interest in understanding and reporting on artificial intelligence and its effects on society. Previous newsroom experience, including experience with student newspapers, is desirable but not mandatory. Applicants may come from journalism, technology, artificial intelligence, machine learning, AI governance or related backgrounds. Strong writing ability is essential. Candidates should be capable of identifying important stories, communicating complex subjects clearly and producing high-quality work under tight deadlines. Tarbell also looks for applicants who are self-motivated, persistent, open-minded and willing to pursue difficult stories. Applicants do not need to meet every preferred criterion to apply. There is no age limit, and a university degree is not required. International applicants are welcome, although some newsroom placements may require relocation and the legal right to work in the United States or United Kingdom. In some cases, Tarbell may be able to support fellows with visa arrangements. Writing Samples and Application Requirements Applicants should be prepared to submit a CV, respond to application questions and provide one to three writing samples. The combined word count of the submitted writing samples must not exceed 4,500 words. Writing samples do not have to focus on artificial intelligence. Candidates are encouraged to submit their strongest journalistic work. Unpublished work may also be submitted if it is journalistic in nature. Shortlisted candidates will progress to a work test designed to assess their ability to succeed in a newsroom covering AI, followed by interviews with the Tarbell team and potential newsroom placement organisations. 2027 Application Timeline Applications for the 2027 Tarbell Fellowship open on 28 September 2026 and close on 22 November 2026.
