The Union for African Population Studies in partnership with the American Institutes for Research has announced applications for the UAPS/AIR P3 Africa Fellowship Cohort 3, an initiative designed to strengthen population and health research capacity across Africa. The fellowship targets early- and mid-career African doctoral researchers and provides a combination of research funding, mentorship, and intensive training to support high-impact population and health studies relevant to the African continent. The programme forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen locally driven research and evidence generation on critical development challenges affecting African populations. About the UAPS/AIR P3 Africa Fellowship The UAPS/AIR P3 Africa Fellowship is a collaborative programme between the Union for African Population Studies and the American Institutes for Research. The initiative aims to equip doctoral researchers with: Research funding Advanced methodological training Academic mentorship Policy translation skills Scientific writing support The fellowship focuses on producing evidence-based research capable of informing policy, improving public health, and strengthening population studies across Africa. Applications are accepted in both English and French. Fellowship Eligibility Criteria The fellowship is open to doctoral researchers who meet specific academic and professional requirements. Eligible applicants must: Be dues-paying Student Members of UAPS in good standing Be citizens of an African country Be currently based and working in Africa Hold a Master’s degree in a relevant field Be enrolled in a doctoral programme with coursework completed Relevant academic disciplines include: Demography Public health Sociology Economics Epidemiology Statistics Related social science fields Previous participants in the AfRes-Data or UAPS/AIR P3 fellowship programmes are not eligible to apply. Research Areas and Themes The fellowship supports research projects focused on population and health-related issues within African contexts. Priority themes include: Reproductive health Migration Urbanisation Climate change Adolescent health Ageing Gender Health and well-being Research proposals must be directly relevant to Africa and demonstrate potential policy or development impact. Fellowship Components and Benefits The fellowship combines financial support, training, and mentorship to strengthen participants’ research capacity. Research Grant Support Selected fellows will receive: USD 10,000 research grant funding The grant will be disbursed in two phases: First tranche: USD 5,000 after the training workshop Second tranche: USD 5,000 after approval of the mid-term report The grant can support: Data collection Fieldwork travel Research assistance Data analysis tools Dissemination activities However, the programme does not permit: Salary payments to fellows Purchase of capital equipment exceeding USD 1,000 Institutional overhead charges Intensive Training Workshop Fellows will participate in a five-day residential training workshop focused on research and academic development. Training topics include: Quantitative research methods Qualitative and mixed methods research DHS and IPUMS data analysis Census and administrative data use Scientific writing Journal publication strategies Research ethics Policy translation and evidence briefs The programme covers: Travel expenses Accommodation Subsistence costs Structured Mentorship Programme Each fellow will be paired with an expert mentor for a 12-month mentorship programme. Mentorship support includes: Monthly check-in meetings Proposal refinement Feedback on research tools and findings Guidance on academic publishing Career development support Journal selection advice Mentors and fellows will also submit progress reports throughout the fellowship period. Application Requirements Applicants must submit their applications through the official online application portal. Required application materials include: Completed application form Research proposal and supporting documentation All mandatory application components outlined in the fellowship call Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.
