Application Deadline
August 10, 2026
The African Population Cohorts Consortium (APCC), with support from the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation), has announced a Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI) for organisations and research teams interested in hosting or collaborating on GEN-IMPACT sub-studies within African population cohorts. The initiative, known as Genomics-led Impact on African Population Health (GEN-IMPACT), is a five-year programme designed to generate high-value African genomic data linked with phenotypic, environmental, clinical, and longitudinal population health information. The programme aims to strengthen genomic research capacity across Africa while addressing locally relevant health challenges through innovative, ethical, and collaborative research approaches. The deadline for submission of Expressions of Interest is Friday, 14 August 2026, at 18:00 East African Time (EAT). Purpose of the GEN-IMPACT Expression of Interest Call The Request for Expression of Interest represents the first stage of a broader process to identify promising cohort-embedded genomic research concepts that can be implemented through APCC population cohorts. The call seeks to identify: APCC cohorts, or cohorts applying for APCC membership, that are interested in hosting GEN-IMPACT sub-studies. African-led research teams, institutions, and consortia with expertise in genomics, population health, bioinformatics, clinical research, epidemiology, ethics, and implementation science. Collaborative opportunities that can address priority health questions using African population data. Research environments capable of supporting genomic studies through existing infrastructure, participant follow-up systems, and data resources. The information gathered through the EOI process will contribute to the GEN-IMPACT landscaping phase, helping researchers and programme partners identify priority populations, geographical areas, and health topics where genomic research can have the greatest impact. Strengthening African Genomic Research Capacity GEN-IMPACT is focused on expanding the availability of African genomic data, particularly for populations that have historically been underrepresented in global genomics research. The initiative will support research projects that combine genomic analysis with detailed population health information, including: Harmonised phenotyping approaches. Biospecimen collection and analysis. Genomic research linked to clinical and environmental data. Long-term population health monitoring. Responsible data sharing practices. Priority will be given to proposals that demonstrate strong scientific potential, ethical research practices, equitable partnerships, and sustainable capacity strengthening within African institutions. Cohorts without existing genomics programmes are also encouraged to participate, provided they can demonstrate strong collaboration opportunities, implementation readiness, and potential to contribute to impactful genomic research. Eligibility and Collaboration Requirements Applications may be submitted by African institutions, research organisations, population cohorts, or research consortia. Human genomics researchers who are not currently members of APCC are also encouraged to participate. However, all proposed GEN-IMPACT sub-studies must meet specific collaboration requirements: The research must be embedded within an APCC population cohort or a cohort that has submitted an application for APCC membership before the EOI deadline. The participant population, health data, and longitudinal follow-up information must originate from the selected cohort. Research teams from outside the cohort network must establish formal collaboration with relevant cohort leaders or designated investigators. Proposed studies should demonstrate clear relevance to African health priorities and opportunities for long-term research impact. Supporting Evidence-Based Health Solutions Across Africa Through GEN-IMPACT, APCC and the SFA Foundation aim to accelerate scientific discovery and strengthen Africa’s ability to conduct globally competitive genomic research. By connecting genomic information with population-based health data, the initiative seeks to improve understanding of diseases, identify emerging health risks, and support the development of evidence-based interventions tailored to African populations. The programme also highlights the importance of responsible research partnerships, ensuring that African researchers and institutions play leading roles in generating, managing, and applying genomic knowledge. Submission Process and Important Dates Interested applicants are required to submit their Expressions of Interest through the Science for Africa Foundation’s Agaseke Grants Management System before the deadline. Key dates include: Information webinar: 15 July 2026 at 13:00 EAT. Expression of Interest submission deadline: 14 August 2026 at 18:00 EAT. Next stage: Selected applicants may be invited to submit full proposals following the review and prioritisation process. Applicants are encouraged to review the full GEN-IMPACT Request for Expression of Interest document before submission. About the Science for Africa Foundation The Science for Africa Foundation is a pan-African, non-profit public charity organisation dedicated to supporting, strengthening, and promoting science, research, and innovation across Africa. Through initiatives focused on research capacity development, scientific collaboration, policy engagement, and innovation, the foundation works to advance African-led solutions to global and regional challenges. The GEN-IMPACT initiative represents another step towards building stronger African research ecosystems and ensuring that genomic science contributes meaningfully to improved health outcomes across the continent.
