Description

The Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada (APF Canada) invites proposals for joint research projects between Canadian and Indo-Pacific-based institutions. Funded through Canada’s Indo-Pacific Initiative, this grant program seeks to strengthen Canada’s ties with the region while producing actionable, policy-relevant insights. Grant Overview Funding Amount: Up to C$40,000 per project Duration: Funds must be used by March 31, 2027 Reporting: Two-page summary due April 30, 2027 Disbursement: Grant awarded to the Canadian lead institution, which can sub-grant to Indo-Pacific partners Priority Themes Proposals should address one or more of the following policy areas: Economic resilience and security Energy security Defence industrial cooperation Regional security Supply chain resilience Critical minerals Innovation and emerging technologies (including digital governance and AI) Eligibility Partnership Requirement: Each proposal must include at least one Canadian institution (lead applicant) and one Indo-Pacific-based institution. The Canadian partner serves as grant holder. Eligible Costs: Travel related to fieldwork, partner meetings, or conferences advancing the project Research or project assistants Local interpretation/translation services Ineligible Costs: Partisan activities Overhead expenses Alcohol, gifts, bonuses, gratuities Airfare must be lowest-fare economy; accommodation and meals must follow Canadian federal travel directives Proposal Requirements (Max 5 Pages) Proposals should include clear headings addressing: Policy Focus & Relevance: What policy issue will the project address? Why is it important for Canada and its Indo-Pacific engagement? Partnership & Roles: Identify Canadian and Indo-Pacific partners Describe each partner’s contribution Approach & Activities: Describe methods and activities Explain how research will produce policy-relevant insights Outputs & Mobilization: Expected deliverables (policy briefs, datasets, reports, roundtables) How outputs will reach decision-makers Annexes (not counted toward 5 pages): Detailed workplan with milestones Budget with justifications Assessment Criteria Proposals will be evaluated based on: Policy relevance and potential impact for Canadian stakeholders Feasibility and quality of research design and workplan Strength and complementarity of Canada–Indo-Pacific partnership Clarity and effectiveness of outputs and knowledge-mobilization plan Key Dates Application Deadline: March 15, 2026, 11:59 PM PST Decision Notifications: April 30, 2026 Project Completion: March 31, 2027 Summary Report Due: April 30, 2027 Submission & Inquiries Submit applications and direct questions to: applications@asiapacific.ca This program supports Canada’s goal of deepening knowledge and policy collaboration with the Indo-Pacific, fostering partnerships that advance mutual understanding and regional engagement.
