The 2026 Capacity-Building Programme for Women Energy Entrepreneurs, led by Global Women’s Network for the Energy Transition (GWNET) in partnership with SADC Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (SACREEE), represents a strategic effort to empower women across the Southern African region to lead in this transformation. As the global transition toward sustainable energy accelerates, the role of women entrepreneurs in shaping this future is becoming increasingly vital. A Programme Designed for Impact This six-month initiative is tailored specifically for women entrepreneurs operating in the energy sector within the Southern African Development Community (SADC). With financial backing from the Austrian Development Agency (ADA), the programme focuses on strengthening business capabilities rather than technical training. Participants will engage in structured learning designed to enhance essential entrepreneurial skills—such as leadership, strategic planning, financial management, and business development. The programme also provides access to experienced mentors and industry role models, creating a supportive ecosystem for growth and innovation. Bridging the Gender Gap in Energy Despite progress in renewable energy adoption, women remain underrepresented in leadership and entrepreneurship within the sector. Structural barriers—including limited access to funding, networks, and capacity-building opportunities—continue to hinder their participation. This programme directly addresses these gaps by equipping women entrepreneurs with the tools, knowledge, and connections needed to scale their businesses. By focusing on soft skills and enterprise development, it empowers participants to navigate complex market environments and position their ventures for long-term success. Importantly, while the programme does not provide direct funding, it facilitates access to finance through matchmaking opportunities with potential investors and funders. This approach reflects a growing recognition that sustainable business growth requires not only capital but also the capacity to attract and manage it effectively. Focus Areas and Strategic Priorities Applicants working in key areas such as solar thermal energy, energy efficiency, and the productive use of energy will receive preferential consideration. These sectors are critical to advancing clean energy access and supporting economic development across the region. By prioritising these focus areas, the programme aligns with broader regional and global goals, including expanding renewable energy adoption, improving energy efficiency, and fostering inclusive economic growth. Flexible and Accessible Learning Designed with working professionals in mind, the programme requires a commitment of approximately 8 hours per month, delivered through virtual platforms. This flexible structure allows participants to balance learning with their existing business responsibilities. The online format also ensures accessibility across the SADC region, enabling women from diverse geographical and socio-economic backgrounds to participate without the need for travel. Eligibility and Application Process The programme is open exclusively to individuals who: Identify as women Hold nationality from a SADC member country Own or run an energy-related business Can commit to the programme’s time requirements Applications are open from 02 March to 03 April 2026, with submissions required in English. Interested candidates must complete an online application form and may be contacted for further evaluation. Why This Programme Matters The transition to sustainable energy systems is not only a technological challenge but also a social and economic one. Ensuring that women are actively involved in this transition is essential for achieving equitable and inclusive outcomes. Programmes like this play a critical role in building a pipeline of women leaders in energy—individuals who can drive innovation, create jobs, and contribute to resilient energy systems in their communities. Moreover, by fostering collaboration between regional organisations and international partners, the initiative strengthens the broader ecosystem supporting clean energy entrepreneurship in Southern Africa. A Catalyst for Regional Transformation The Capacity-Building Programme for Women Energy Entrepreneurs is more than a training initiative—it is a catalyst for systemic change. By investing in women-led businesses, it contributes to a more inclusive energy sector while supporting the region’s broader development goals. For women entrepreneurs seeking to expand their impact, build strategic networks, and position their businesses within the growing clean energy market, this programme offers a valuable and timely opportunity.
