Role Overview The Regional Communications Advisor – East and Southern Africa (ECSA) plays a strategic leadership role in managing and coordinating all communications activities for CARE US across the region. Reporting to the Executive Director, Global Communications and Media, the role is responsible for strengthening CARE’s media presence, storytelling, and public visibility, while ensuring accountability to donors, partners, and affected communities. The position acts as both a regional correspondent and editor, working closely with Country Offices and global communications teams to generate timely, high-quality content that supports media engagement, fundraising, brand-building, advocacy, and social media. Role Purpose The Regional Communications Advisor is responsible for: Maximising CARE’s regional and global media exposure in East and Southern Africa Communicating humanitarian needs, crises, and CARE’s emergency responses effectively Coordinating communication strategies between CARE US, CARE International, and Country Offices Ensuring a consistent and reliable pipeline of compelling content for global audiences Key Responsibilities Regional Media Relations The role leads regional media engagement by: Generating and disseminating press releases, quotes, and statements during emerging and ongoing crises Serving as the primary communications liaison between CARE US and Country Offices in the region Coordinating editorial planning, messaging, and information flow across multiple countries Supporting US and global media engagement, including managing incoming media requests Building and maintaining relationships with key US-based, regional, and pan-African media outlets Developing and implementing a regional media strategy to increase CARE’s share of voice Supporting Country Offices with media engagement planning and execution Preparing spokesperson talking points aligned with CARE’s advocacy priorities and core messages Monitoring regional media to support proactive and reactive engagement Crisis Communications The Regional Communications Advisor supports crisis response by: Participating in CARE US’s integrated global crisis management processes Acting as a key media coordination point during humanitarian and organisational crises Supporting Country Offices with reactive statements and crisis-related messaging Working with Regional Management Teams to ensure crisis communication strategies are current and actionable Ensuring rapid access to spokespersons, images, video, and key messages during emergencies Content Gathering and Storytelling The role drives high-impact storytelling by: Working closely with Country Offices to understand programmes, context, and unique stories Identifying programmatic activities that best illustrate CARE’s impact Serving as a writer, interviewer, photographer, and videographer when documenting CARE’s work Producing and curating country-level story packages, including narratives, photos, and videos Ensuring content meets CARE’s brand, ethical, and safeguarding standards Supporting Member-led content trips and commissioned storytelling initiatives Reviewing and editing stories, photos, and videos in line with CARE guidelines Country Office Support and Capacity Building The position strengthens regional communications capacity by: Supporting a unified approach to communications capability building across Country Offices Providing training, coaching, and mentoring to communications focal points Reviewing communications materials and reports to ensure quality, consistency, and compliance Acting as a first point of contact for communications policy, procedures, and standards Supporting Country Offices in preparedness planning for humanitarian crises Required Qualifications and Experience Professional Experience and Education The ideal candidate brings: A minimum of 12 years’ professional experience in communications, journalism, or public relations At least 5 years’ experience working on humanitarian emergencies in East, Central, or Southern Africa Demonstrated experience working in countries such as Sudan, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia, DRC, Mozambique, or Madagascar A degree in communications, journalism, digital media, or a related field A Master’s degree as an added advantage Strong existing networks with journalists, wire agencies, and media outlets regionally and globally Core Skills and Competencies Key competencies include: Advanced ability to draft, edit, and oversee high-quality communications content Skill in translating complex humanitarian issues into accessible public messaging Strong visual and design sensibility, with experience producing multimedia content Proven track record of delivering impactful communications campaigns Ability to manage multiple high-priority tasks under pressure Strong analytical, judgement, and project coordination skills High levels of initiative, independence, and accountability Excellent collaboration skills across multicultural and geographically dispersed teams Preferred Qualifications Additional strengths include: Experience as a professional photographer, videographer, or media writer Proficiency with Adobe Creative Suite Experience with media monitoring tools and analysis Experience working across time zones with global teams Experience supporting senior leadership and C-suite engagement Experience supporting communications across multiple country contexts Organisational Commitment CARE is an Equal Opportunity Employer, committed to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
