The Centre for Budget and Policy Studies (CBPS) has announced the opening of applications for its 2026–27 Research Fellowship cohort, with submissions due by 31 May 2026. Established in 1998 in Bengaluru, CBPS is an independent, non-partisan, not-for-profit research institution committed to advancing knowledge in critical areas of public policy and development. About the Fellowship Launched in 2023 to mark CBPS’s 25th anniversary, the Research Fellowship offers an immersive opportunity for early-career scholars to engage deeply with policy-relevant research. The programme focuses on key thematic areas including education, gender, governance, health and nutrition, public finance, livelihoods, and social security. Fellows are integrated into an intellectually stimulating and collaborative environment, where they work closely with experienced researchers. Through active participation in ongoing projects, fellows gain exposure to rigorous academic practices, applied research methodologies, and policy analysis. The programme also includes in-house lectures, seminars, workshops, and public events designed to enrich learning and encourage critical engagement. Each fellow is paired with a mentor who provides guidance throughout the fellowship period. This mentorship ensures that participants can meaningfully contribute to research initiatives while developing their own scholarly interests. The experience is structured to support both professional growth and academic exploration within a supportive institutional framework. Fellowship Benefits Selected fellows receive a monthly stipend of ₹25,000 for the duration of the programme. In addition to financial support, fellows are granted access to CBPS office facilities, including workspace, internet, and library resources. These provisions are intended to create an enabling environment for research and collaboration. It is important to note that the fellowship does not cover expenses related to housing, transportation, or additional personal costs. Applicants are expected to make independent arrangements for these needs during the fellowship period. Eligibility Criteria The fellowship is primarily intended for individuals who have recently completed their undergraduate studies or are in the final year of their Bachelor’s programme. CBPS encourages applications from candidates across diverse academic disciplines and methodological backgrounds, reflecting its commitment to interdisciplinary research. Particular emphasis is placed on inclusivity and representation. Applications are strongly encouraged from scholars belonging to historically underrepresented groups, including those marginalized by class, caste, gender, religion, linguistic identity, or those who are first-generation learners. This approach aligns with CBPS’s broader mission of fostering equity and diversity in research and policy discourse. Application Process Applicants are required to submit a complete application package consisting of the following documents: A Statement of Purpose (SoP) of no more than 1,500 words, outlining the applicant’s interest in the fellowship themes and research A current curriculum vitae or resume submitted in MS Word format Two letters of reference All application materials must be submitted via email to fellows@cbps.in before the stated deadline.
