The Center for Economic and Social Rights (CESR) is seeking a dynamic Communications Officer to strengthen its narrative power and advance economic justice worldwide. CESR is an international organization that leverages human rights to promote fairer, more sustainable economies, collaborating with partners globally to expose economic policies that undermine rights and propose alternatives rooted in dignity, equity, and solidarity. Communications play a central role in shaping narratives, mobilizing collective power, and ensuring complex economic debates are accessible and actionable. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence global discourse on economic justice while supporting a small, mission-driven team. Role Overview The Communications Officer will report to the Executive Director and lead CESR’s communications strategy while managing day-to-day operations. The role will: Develop and implement narrative-shifting communications strategies aligned with CESR’s mission Amplify research and advocacy outputs for diverse audiences Strengthen both internal and external communications While not required, experience in design tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Photoshop), multilingual communication, and accessibility-focused content production is considered an asset. Key Responsibilities Strategy and Leadership Lead and refine CESR’s communications strategy, defining success metrics and assessing progress Build shared understanding across the organization of target audiences, key messages, and narrative objectives Set a vision and pathway for storytelling and advocacy aligned with strategic priorities Content Production and Storytelling Produce and oversee diverse communications outputs, including: Reports, briefings, factsheets, blog posts, op-eds, and audiovisual materials Press releases, newsletters, and annual reports Ensure outputs are accessible, compelling, and strategically targeted Promote CESR’s visual identity and ensure materials meet quality standards Adapt and manage communications using established templates for publications, presentations, and social media assets Digital and Media Engagement Manage CESR’s website, including content creation, editing, accessibility improvements, and CMS transition Develop engaging social media content across LinkedIn, X, Bluesky, and relevant listservs Build relationships with journalists and media outlets to amplify CESR’s perspectives in public debates Collaboration and Organizational Support Integrate communications into project planning with program teams Manage relationships with external service providers such as designers, videographers, and translators Support resource mobilization efforts through fundraising materials and appeals Provide strategic communications guidance and support internal team members, including multilingual production Candidate Profile CESR seeks a strategic communicator with a strong political compass and commitment to economic and social justice. The ideal candidate is comfortable working at both strategic and hands-on levels, shaping long-term narratives while producing and editing content daily. Key personal attributes include: Collaborative mindset, able to work across teams and disciplines Strong ability to translate complex research into clear, accessible, and mobilizing messaging Attention to equity, accessibility, and representation in storytelling Organized, adaptable, and capable of managing competing priorities Qualifications and Experience Candidates should bring: Degree in journalism, communications, or related field, or equivalent professional experience Minimum five years of strategic communications experience within human rights, social justice, or advocacy contexts Strong understanding of narrative strategy and audience-focused messaging Excellent writing, editing, and content creation skills Familiarity with current digital tools, platforms, and emerging communications trends Collaborative working style and ability to manage multiple priorities across time zones Preferred qualifications: Fluency in an additional language (Spanish advantageous) Experience in multilingual, international, or cross-cultural contexts Understanding of accessibility and inclusive design principles Employment Details Location: Flexible, remote, with overlapping hours for collaboration Contract: Part-time, initial one-year contract (renewable based on funding and needs) Compensation: Pro-rated USD 37,000–60,000 full-time equivalent, adjusted for experience and location CESR encourages applications from individuals from historically disadvantaged communities, including people of color, women, people with disabilities, LGBTQI+ individuals, and those from the Global South.
