Christian Aid is seeking a Gender Justice Lead to provide strategic leadership and organisational accountability for gender justice across its global work. This is a permanent, full-time role with hybrid working, based in one of Christian Aid’s global hubs in Abuja, Bogotá, Dhaka, Nairobi, or New Delhi. The position sits at senior level and plays a critical role in shaping programme quality, policy influence, and advocacy impact worldwide. Role Purpose Reporting to the Global Head of Programme Policy and Practice, the Gender Justice Lead serves as: The single point of accountability for gender justice leadership across the organisation The strategic lead for gender justice as both a standalone thematic priority and a cross-cutting mainstreamed approach The owner of the global gender justice thematic strategy, including policy and advocacy components A senior leader responsible for ensuring measurable progress, learning, and impact The role provides strategic oversight of Christian Aid’s global policy and advocacy work on gender justice and ensures alignment with organisational values, strategy, and evidence. Strategic Leadership and Accountability The Gender Justice Lead is responsible for: Co-developing, delivering, and regularly reviewing a global thematic strategy on gender justice Defining clear measures of success, progress, and impact, and reporting against these at agreed intervals Ensuring coherence between gender justice programming, policy, advocacy, and organisational priorities Providing leadership that embeds gender justice across Christian Aid’s five Multi-Country Clusters (MCCs) The role directly manages the Senior Gender Adviser and provides strategic direction for gender mainstreaming, protection, and inclusion across programmes. Technical Leadership and Programme Quality As the organisation’s technical expert on gender justice, the post-holder will: Lead on gender justice as a standalone thematic focus, while overseeing effective gender mainstreaming Support staff across all MCCs, the Impact department, and the Income & Public Engagement department to: Design high-quality gender justice programmes Fundraise for gender justice-focused and gender-integrated initiatives Deliver strong, evidence-based signature programmes Apply analysis of power, social exclusion, and gender norms to programme design and adaptive management Ensure programming reflects current global thinking on gender, social norms, and intersectionality Policy, Advocacy, and Thought Leadership The Gender Justice Lead provides strategic oversight and hands-on leadership in: Shaping Christian Aid’s global policy and advocacy agenda on gender justice Developing and delivering thematic public policy analysis, positioning, and research Producing high-quality writing and thought leadership rooted in: Programme evidence Partner experience Theological reflection Ensuring advocacy efforts are evidence-based, contextually grounded, and designed for maximum influence in global spaces The role actively collaborates with policy, advocacy, and communications colleagues to ensure learning from programmes informs public engagement and advocacy materials. Learning, Evidence, and Organisational Change A core focus of the role is fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement by: Identifying and promoting best practice among partners and programmes Facilitating knowledge sharing across regions and thematic areas Commissioning or directly leading research, learning reviews, and evaluations Collaborating with the Strategy and Learning Manager and the Impact and Evidence Manager to: Strengthen evidence gathering Measure and communicate impact Adapt and improve signature programme approaches The role also contributes to organisational culture change by promoting critical reflection, innovation, and learning on gender justice. External Engagement and Partnerships The Gender Justice Lead builds Christian Aid’s external profile and influence by: Developing and maintaining strong global networks on gender justice Representing Christian Aid in national, regional, and international advocacy spaces Positioning Christian Aid as a credible, values-driven leader on gender justice Expanding a pool of strategic partners to support innovative, best-practice-aligned work This external leadership contributes to enhanced sector reputation, increased influence, and stronger collaboration opportunities. Candidate Profile The ideal candidate brings: A postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in international development or a related field Deep understanding of gender theory, practice, and global debates across multiple regions Strong knowledge of the role of faith-based actors in advancing gender justice Extensive experience designing, managing, and implementing gender programmes in multi-country contexts Proven experience influencing global institutions and policy spaces Advanced skills in communication, negotiation, facilitation, and stakeholder engagement Experience in monitoring, evaluation, adaptive management, and organisational learning High emotional intelligence and the ability to lead conversations on sensitive and complex issues Organisational Values and Inclusion Christian Aid is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and safeguarding.
