Christian Aid is seeking a Governance & Rights Lead to provide strategic leadership and organisational accountability for governance and human rights across its global programmes. This is a permanent, full-time role with hybrid working, based in one of Christian Aid’s global hubs in Abuja, Bogotá, Dhaka, Nairobi, or New Delhi. Role Purpose Reporting to the Global Head of Programme Policy and Practice, the Governance & Rights Lead serves as: The single point of accountability for governance and rights leadership across the organisation The strategic owner of the Governance & Rights thematic priority A senior leader ensuring alignment between programming, policy, advocacy, and organisational strategy The lead responsible for measuring, reporting, and maximising impact The role works closely with the Strategy and Learning Manager and the Policy and Advocacy Lead to ensure governance and rights approaches are evidence-based, coherent, and influential. Strategic Leadership and Accountability Key leadership responsibilities include: Co-developing, delivering, and periodically reviewing a global thematic strategy on Governance & Rights Defining clear indicators of progress, success, and impact aligned with organisational goals and values Reporting regularly on performance and learning to support adaptive management and impact maximisation Ensuring coherence across governance and rights programming in all five Multi-Country Clusters (MCCs) The role provides organisational leadership on governance and rights as both a standalone thematic focus and a cross-cutting priority. Technical Leadership and Programme Quality As Christian Aid’s organisational technical expert on governance and rights, the post-holder will: Lead on governance and rights programming across social, economic, civil, and political dimensions Support staff across MCCs, the Impact Department, and the Income & Public Engagement Department to: Design high-quality governance and rights programmes Fundraise for governance and rights-focused initiatives Deliver strong, evidence-driven signature programmes Apply analysis of power, accountability, and social exclusion to programme design and implementation Ensure programming reflects current global thinking on rights-based approaches and governance systems The role bridges “supply-side” governance work, such as institutional strengthening and accountability, with “demand-side” approaches that strengthen citizen voice, empowerment, and participation. Policy, Advocacy, and Influence The Governance & Rights Lead plays a central role in strengthening Christian Aid’s influence by: Building strong working relationships with policy and advocacy colleagues, particularly the Global Policy and Advocacy Lead for Governance & Rights Ensuring learning from programme practice informs public policy positions and advocacy strategies Providing evidence, analysis, and insight for advocacy materials and influencing efforts Supporting alignment between programme delivery, policy positions, and global influencing priorities This role ensures governance and rights advocacy is grounded in lived experience, credible evidence, and strategic positioning. Learning, Evidence, and Organisational Change A core function of the role is fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement through: Identifying best practice across partners and programmes Facilitating knowledge sharing and peer learning across regions Commissioning or leading research, evaluations, and learning reviews Collaborating with the Strategy and Learning Manager and the Impact and Evidence Manager to: Strengthen evidence generation Measure and communicate impact Adapt and refine signature programme approaches The role supports adaptive programming and organisational learning across governance and rights work. External Engagement and Partnerships The Governance & Rights Lead builds Christian Aid’s external profile and partnerships by: Developing and maintaining global networks on governance and human rights Representing Christian Aid in national, regional, and international spaces Positioning the organisation as a credible, values-driven leader on governance and rights Expanding a diverse pool of strategic partners aligned with sector best practice This external engagement enhances Christian Aid’s influence, innovation, and collaborative reach. Candidate Profile The ideal candidate brings: A postgraduate qualification or equivalent experience in international development or a related discipline Deep understanding of governance and human rights theory and practice across multiple regions Proven experience translating rights-based concepts into practice in multi-country programmes Strong knowledge of both institutional governance reform and citizen-led accountability approaches Understanding of the role of faith-based actors in promoting governance and defending rights Extensive experience in strategic planning, programme management, and adaptive M&E Advanced skills in negotiation, facilitation, influencing, and stakeholder engagement High interpersonal sensitivity and the ability to lead discussions on complex and sensitive issues Organisational Values and Inclusion Christian Aid is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and safeguarding.
