CIFAR Global Scholars Program 2027–2029: Prestigious Fellowship for Early-Career Researchers
globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

October 3, 2026

Description

The Canadian Institute for Advanced Research (CIFAR) has opened applications for the 2027–2029 CIFAR Global Scholars Program, an opportunity designed to accelerate the careers of exceptional early-career researchers and help them become influential leaders in interdisciplinary research. The programme welcomes promising researchers from the natural sciences, biomedical sciences, social sciences and humanities who are ready to pursue ambitious, high-risk and high-reward research while developing international collaborations and advanced leadership skills. Applications opened on 2 September 2026 and will close on 4 November 2026 at 12:00 PM Eastern Standard Time (UTC-5). About the CIFAR Global Scholars Program The CIFAR Global Scholars Program is designed for highly talented junior faculty and early-career researchers entering the critical first years of independent research leadership. Selected Scholars become members of one of CIFAR’s interdisciplinary research programmes for two years, joining an international community of leading researchers. They participate as equal members alongside established CIFAR Fellows and Advisors, giving them opportunities to exchange ideas, develop collaborative projects and explore new research directions. The programme is particularly suited to researchers whose work crosses disciplinary boundaries and has the potential to generate transformative knowledge or address major challenges facing science and society. Fostering Interdisciplinary Research A central component of the programme is participation in a CIFAR research programme. Scholars attend two research meetings each year, held in different locations around the world. These meetings provide opportunities to: Present and discuss work in progress. Collaborate with researchers from different disciplines. Develop innovative research ideas. Establish international research partnerships. Explore emerging fields and unconventional approaches. Contribute to research addressing questions of global importance. The interdisciplinary environment allows Scholars to move beyond traditional academic boundaries and develop research programmes with broader intellectual and societal impact. Building International Research Networks The programme provides early-career researchers with access to an extensive international research community. Scholars connect with peers, senior researchers and established leaders across different academic disciplines. The CIFAR Global Scholars Annual Meeting brings Scholars together for networking, leadership development and community building. Participants also have dedicated opportunities to develop collaborative research concepts and explore potential seed-funding proposals. CIFAR further facilitates interactions with leaders from government, industry, business and civil society, helping Scholars broaden their professional networks and identify new avenues for applying or communicating their research. Leadership Development Many researchers become principal investigators without receiving formal training in how to lead teams, mentor trainees or communicate their research effectively. The CIFAR Global Scholars Program addresses this gap through the Azrieli Foundation Leadership Development Program. Training focuses on important areas of research leadership, including: Team leadership Trainee mentorship Science communication Science advocacy Scholars also have opportunities to apply these skills in practical settings by organizing academic events, contributing to CIFAR symposia, delivering public presentations and publishing opinion pieces. Who Should Apply? The programme is intended for early-career researchers and junior faculty with the potential to become influential research leaders. Candidates should be prepared to demonstrate: Strong research ability and academic potential. Interest in ambitious, boundary-pushing research. A willingness to collaborate across disciplines. Potential to contribute meaningfully to a CIFAR interdisciplinary research programme. An interest in developing leadership, communication and mentorship skills. The programme is particularly valuable for researchers seeking to expand beyond their immediate academic field and build international networks during the early stages of independent research careers. Research Areas CIFAR welcomes applications from researchers working across a broad range of disciplines, including: Natural sciences Biomedical sciences Social sciences Humanities Applicants should review the CIFAR research programmes accepting applications to determine where their research interests align with the current opportunities. Programme Benefits Successful CIFAR Global Scholars gain access to a comprehensive professional development and research environment that includes: Two years of participation in a CIFAR interdisciplinary research programme. Collaboration with leading international researchers. International networking and mentorship opportunities. Leadership development through the Azrieli Foundation Leadership Development Program. Participation in the annual Global Scholars meeting. Opportunities to develop interdisciplinary research collaborations. Engagement with leaders outside academia. Opportunities to organize events, deliver public talks and communicate research to broader audiences. These benefits are designed to strengthen both the Scholar’s research programme and long-term leadership trajectory.
