People Powered has launched the Climate Democracy Accelerator (CDA), a six-month global programme designed to support governments and civil society leaders in developing participatory approaches to climate policy. The programme responds to the growing urgency of climate-related challenges, including rising sea levels, droughts, wildfires, declining agricultural productivity, and extreme weather events. Purpose of the Climate Democracy Accelerator The Climate Democracy Accelerator is built on the idea that climate solutions are most effective when communities are actively involved in shaping them. Renewable Energy Participating projects in this area focus on expanding access to clean energy sources such as solar, wind, and hydropower. The aim is to reduce dependence on fossil fuels while improving energy access for communities. Projects may explore how participatory decision-making can influence energy policy, infrastructure development, and local adoption of renewable technologies. Regenerative Agriculture Regenerative agriculture initiatives focus on restoring soil health, improving biodiversity, and strengthening water systems. These approaches aim to increase resilience to climate change while supporting local food systems and economic sustainability. The programme encourages holistic agricultural practices that integrate environmental restoration with socioeconomic development. Programme Structure and Support The Climate Democracy Accelerator is a six-month training and implementation programme that supports approximately 30 participants per cohort. Selected participants are given the tools and resources needed to design and implement participatory climate initiatives in their respective countries. Support provided through the programme includes: A dedicated mentor for project development Step-by-step guidance through the Participation Playbook Online courses, workshops, and live training sessions Access to country-based peer learning groups Localised case studies relevant to each participant’s context In addition to training and mentorship, participants receive financial support. Each selected participant is awarded a $10,000 USD implementation grant. The top five projects in each cohort are eligible for an additional $15,000 USD award. It is designed for individuals working in climate policy, community engagement, environmental governance, and related fields. While the initiative prioritises applicants from Brazil, Indonesia, India, and Mexico, it also welcomes participants from other regions, particularly Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Impact and Previous Success Since its launch in 2023, the Climate Democracy Accelerator has supported more than 50 climate action and citizen engagement initiatives worldwide. These projects have addressed a range of issues, including deforestation, renewable energy adoption, climate policy reform, and sustainable agriculture. Examples of previous initiatives include community-led climate assemblies, participatory environmental restoration programmes in rural regions, and citizen-driven policy development in areas affected by climate disasters. One highlighted case involved a rural community in Zimbabwe that used participatory methods to influence climate policy, reduce deforestation, and introduce regenerative farming practices following cyclone-related environmental damage.
