The Commonwealth Leaders Academy has opened applications for the Commonwealth Young Leaders Fellowship 2026, a flagship leadership development programme designed to equip young leaders with the knowledge, networks, and practical experience needed to drive positive change within their communities and across the Commonwealth. The three-month fellowship will bring together exceptional young people from Commonwealth member states, providing opportunities for leadership development, mentorship, international collaboration, and practical implementation of community-focused projects. About the Commonwealth Young Leaders Fellowship The Commonwealth Young Leaders Fellowship is designed to support the next generation of leaders working to address complex social, economic, environmental, and governance challenges. The programme focuses on developing leadership capabilities while creating opportunities for fellows to engage with policymakers, senior practitioners, institutional partners, and fellow changemakers from across the Commonwealth. Through a combination of training, mentorship, international exposure, and practical leadership activities, fellows will strengthen their ability to design and implement impactful initiatives. Fellowship Structure and Experience The fellowship provides participants with an immersive leadership journey built around five key components: • Leadership development focused on strengthening essential leadership competencies. • International exposure through engagement with Commonwealth institutions and global networks. • Mentorship and coaching from experienced leaders, practitioners, and policymakers. • Participation in a Commonwealth-wide leadership network. • Development of a practical impact project addressing a local challenge connected to a broader Commonwealth theme. Selected fellows will participate in a three-month programme running from August to October 2026. Programme Timeline The fellowship will be delivered through three main phases: • Month 1: Onboarding and Immersion WeekFellows will participate in introductory activities focused on leadership development, programme orientation, and network building. • Month 2: Institutional PlacementParticipants will gain practical exposure through institutional engagement and professional learning opportunities. • Month 3: National-Level Project ImplementationFellows will design and implement a local intervention connected to a Commonwealth-wide challenge. • Final ShowcaseParticipants will present their projects and share lessons learned from the fellowship experience. Fellowship Themes Applicants can engage with one or more of the fellowship’s priority themes, including: • Democratic Governance and Civic Participation. • Digital Inclusion. • Peacebuilding. • Sustainable Development and Climate Justice. • Public Service. These themes reflect key areas where young leaders can contribute to social progress and sustainable development. Eligibility Criteria The fellowship is open to young people who: • Are typically between 18 and 35 years old. • Are citizens or residents of Commonwealth member states. • Demonstrate a record of community leadership, public service, or social impact work. • Show strong commitment to creating positive change. • Are able to commit fully to the three-month fellowship period. Applicants should be prepared to participate in all programme activities, including international convenings in the United Kingdom and Antigua and Barbuda. International Travel Requirements As part of the fellowship experience, selected participants will attend two international gatherings: • A one-week convening in the United Kingdom during late August 2026, hosted at partner institutions in London. • A one-week convening in Antigua and Barbuda linked to activities at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting. For the 2026 cohort, fellows are generally responsible for covering their own travel-related expenses unless additional support arrangements become available. Available Support for Fellows The Commonwealth Leaders Academy will provide selected participants with: • Invitation and support letters for visa applications. • Guidance related to international participation requirements. • Potential partial travel bursaries or accommodation support where funding partnerships are confirmed. The organisation also encourages applicants to explore additional financial support through employers, educational institutions, or national youth agencies. Developing Future Commonwealth Leaders The Commonwealth Young Leaders Fellowship aims to strengthen a generation of leaders capable of addressing emerging global challenges through collaboration, innovation, and community-driven solutions.
