Organization Overview Community Forests Pemba (CFP) is a Tanzanian non-governmental organization founded and headquartered on Pemba Island, Zanzibar. Since 2008, CFP has worked in close collaboration with local partners and its international sister organization, Community Forests International, to advance shared goals of social, economic, and ecological prosperity. Together, the organizations have planted more than three million trees, developed innovative climate-smart community enterprises, and demonstrated that community-led solutions are central to sustainable development. CFP is currently implementing the Zanzibar Women’s Leadership in Adaptation Project (ZanzAdapt), funded by Global Affairs Canada, in partnership with multiple stakeholders. The project aims to strengthen gender equality and nature-based climate adaptation capacity in vulnerable coastal communities across Pemba and Unguja Islands. Primary beneficiaries are women and their households, supported through regenerative livelihoods that enhance ecological resilience, economic security, and social inclusion. Position Summary Position Title: Appropriate Technology Officer Organization: Community Forests Pemba Duty Station: Zanzibar City, Unguja Island, Zanzibar, Tanzania Employment Type: Full-time, permanent Project: Zanzibar Women’s Leadership in Adaptation (ZanzAdapt) The Appropriate Technology Officer will play a critical role in supporting women-led, nature-based livelihoods, particularly in agroforestry and mangrove conservation. The position focuses on improving access to appropriate technologies, physical resources, training, and technical backstopping for beneficiaries. Working closely with field staff, management, and community groups, the officer will support planning, construction, refurbishment, and operation of post-harvest and value-addition facilities. Based full-time on Unguja Island, the officer will join a multidisciplinary team of local and international staff and contribute directly to advancing gender-responsive climate adaptation outcomes. Key Responsibilities Gender-Responsive Technology and Physical Resource Support Support implementation of ZanzAdapt activities under the direction of project and operations management. Coordinate with field teams and beneficiaries to plan, procure, deliver, and monitor the use of appropriate technologies and physical resources. Conduct needs and opportunity assessments for refurbishment or enhancement of cooperative post-harvest and value-addition facilities. Develop implementation plans and budgets for construction and refurbishment activities. Oversee new construction and facility improvements in collaboration with CFP management. Serve as a liaison between field teams and finance staff to evaluate procurement quality, suitability, and cost-effectiveness. Ensure beneficiaries receive follow-up support to promote proper use and maintenance of distributed resources. Collaborate with Monitoring and Evaluation teams to track resource use, collect data, and contribute to reporting. Participate in gender equality training and professional development in climate-adaptive agroforestry and participatory gender justice approaches. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Learning Conduct baseline surveys and participatory post-training evaluations with beneficiaries. Integrate learning into activity refinement and adaptive management. Develop activity concept notes, budgets, and procurement documentation. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual work plans and progress reports. Document and promote success stories aligned with project communications strategies. Maintain detailed beneficiary tracking and performance indicator reporting. Key Performance Indicators Construction or refurbishment of four cooperative post-harvest and value-addition facilities. More than 20 percent of agroforestry beneficiaries reporting improved access to post-harvest equipment or facilities. At least 500 agroforestry beneficiaries gaining access to gender-responsive physical resources. 1,500 mangrove forest beneficiaries supported with physical resources and/or land governance rights. Over 80 percent of mangrove forest beneficiaries, all women, receiving appropriate physical resources. Required Experience and Qualifications Minimum of three years of professional experience in community engagement, training, or local stakeholder coordination. Relevant degree or certification in agriculture, community development, project management, or related fields. Experience in procurement, construction-related project management, and community-based initiatives. Familiarity with monitoring and evaluation frameworks. Experience working with government institutions, NGOs, contractors, and community groups. Demonstrated understanding of gender-responsive programming and women’s roles in natural resource management. Experience working within coastal and Islamic cultural contexts. Core Competencies and Technical Skills Strong collaboration, facilitation, and teamwork skills. Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English and Swahili. Proven problem-solving ability and attention to detail. High standards of accountability and professionalism. Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Zoom, and reporting tools. Technical expertise in horticulture, engineering, mangrove restoration, or gender equity approaches is an asset. Compensation and Application Process Full-time position (40 hours per week) with 28 days of paid annual leave and organizational health benefits. Compensation is commensurate with experience and qualifications. Periodic travel between project locations is required; project-related travel and equipment will be provided.
