CREA invites applications for the Institute on Gender and WaSH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene), a five-day, in-person learning programme to be held from 16–20 February 2026 in India. The Institute is designed for WaSH practitioners, development professionals, academics, civil society actors, and movement leaders who seek to deepen their understanding of sanitation through a gender, sexuality, and human rights lens. This Institute offers a unique opportunity to critically examine the urban sanitation ecosystem and strengthen participants’ ability to design and advocate for inclusive, equitable, and rights-based WaSH interventions. About CREA CREA is a global feminist human rights organisation led by feminists in the Global South. It works to build feminist leadership, expand sexual and reproductive freedoms, and advance the human rights of all people. CREA engages in advocacy, research, and capacity-building at national, regional, and international levels, with a strong commitment to justice, dignity, and equality. About the Gender and WaSH Programme CREA’s Gender and WaSH Programme brings a gender-, sexuality-, and rights-based approach to the urban sanitation sector. The programme highlights how sanitation systems often reproduce structural inequalities related to gender, caste, disability, age, labour, and sexuality. The programme prioritises the voices and lived experiences of structurally excluded groups, including: Women and girls Trans, intersex, nonbinary, lesbian, bisexual, and gay persons Persons with disabilities Sex workers Elderly people Sanitation workers, including those affected by caste-based sanitation labour and manual scavenging CREA functions as a virtual and in-person resource hub, building the capacity of civil society organisations, urban local bodies, sanitation workers, WaSH committees, and other sector actors to integrate intersectional feminist approaches into policy and practice. Objectives of the Institute The Gender and WaSH Institute 2026 aims to: Build a nuanced understanding of the intersections between gender, sexuality, caste, disability, labour, and power within urban sanitation systems Critically analyse sanitation laws, policies, programmes, and institutions through feminist and human rights frameworks Strengthen participants’ ability to identify and challenge structural exclusions, including caste-based sanitation labour, ableist infrastructure, and gendered divisions of work Equip participants with conceptual and practical tools to design gender-transformative, disability-inclusive, and rights-based WaSH interventions Foster a sustained learning and solidarity network of practitioners and advocates committed to inclusive sanitation Format and Methodology Fully in-person, residential programme Conducted entirely in English Dates: 16–20 February 2026 (participants must arrive by 15 February) Daily sessions from 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, over five consecutive days The Institute uses diverse and participatory pedagogies, including: Facilitated discussions Group work and practical exercises Presentations and readings Videos with subtitles Reflective and experiential learning methods Eligibility Criteria The Institute is open to: Senior and mid-level WaSH practitioners Development and civil society professionals Academicians and researchers Movement actors and advocates working on sanitation, health, gender, labour, disability, or urban issues Participation is strongly encouraged from structurally excluded people, including women human rights defenders; trans, intersex, nonbinary and queer persons; persons with disabilities; people living with HIV; sex workers; and sanitation workers. Additional requirements: Applicants must be Indian citizens Applicants must be based in India Working knowledge of English is required Costs and Logistics CREA will cover: Tuition and Institute costs Travel Accommodation (twin-sharing basis) Meals The Institute will be held in Delhi or Jaipur. Selected participants are required to stay at the venue for the full duration and commit to attending all sessions.
