The Southern Africa Embrace Foundation (SAEF) is inviting applications from individuals interested in joining its delegation to the 71st Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (CSW71), scheduled for 2027. The opportunity is intended for individuals committed to advancing gender equality, women’s empowerment and youth development through international advocacy and engagement. CSW71 will provide delegates with an opportunity to engage with global discussions on women’s rights, gender equality and strategies for advancing women’s empowerment. Selected delegates will participate as members of the SAEF delegation, gaining exposure to international policy discussions and opportunities to connect with individuals and organisations working towards gender equality. The application deadline is 31 December 2026. Participation is self-funded, meaning successful applicants must cover their own travel, accommodation and related expenses. Overview of the CSW71 SAEF Delegation Programme: United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, 71st Session (CSW71) Organising organisation: Southern Africa Embrace Foundation (SAEF) Conference period: 2027 Mandatory delegation availability: 8–12 March 2027 Application deadline: 31 December 2026 Participation type: Self-funded Required contribution: CAD $100 for selected delegates Eligible applicants: Individuals interested in gender equality and women’s empowerment Application method: Online application form About the Commission on the Status of Women The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women is a global intergovernmental body dedicated to promoting gender equality and the empowerment of women. Its sessions bring together representatives, advocates and stakeholders to discuss progress, challenges and policy approaches related to women’s rights. Through its delegation, SAEF seeks to provide participants with an opportunity to engage with this international platform and contribute to conversations on gender equality. Delegates may also have opportunities to share perspectives, participate in networking activities and support the foundation’s broader women and youth empowerment objectives. SAEF is an organisation accredited with consultative status through the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), according to the application information provided. Eligibility and Selection Considerations Applicants should demonstrate a genuine interest in gender equality, women’s rights, advocacy or youth empowerment. The application requests personal details, contact information, social media profiles and information about previous participation in CSW or other United Nations conferences. Applicants must confirm whether they can attend mandatory delegation meetings and activities from 8–12 March 2027. They must also agree to submit a 500-word report about their participation by 10 April 2027. Visa considerations: SAEF states that priority will be given to applicants who already hold valid United States visas, are based in regions with fewer travel restrictions or are citizens of visa-exempt countries. Applicants who require a visa may still apply. SAEF indicates that an official UN Women visa-support letter will be generated through the INDIGO registration system after delegation approval. The foundation does not provide additional visa-support letters. Applicants should independently verify current US entry requirements and visa eligibility before making travel arrangements. Costs and Financial Responsibilities Participation in the SAEF delegation is self-funded. Selected delegates are responsible for covering their own flights, accommodation, meals, local transportation and other travel-related expenses. A CAD $100 donation is required before official INDIGO registration and issuance of the UN ECOSOC approval letter. According to SAEF, the contribution supports a delegation gathering during CSW and, where funds remain, its Women and Youth Empowerment Programme. The donation is non-refundable, including when a delegate is unable to obtain a visa. The United Nations does not charge a general attendance fee for CSW. The CAD $100 contribution is a requirement set by SAEF for participation in its delegation, rather than a United Nations conference admission fee. Applicants should carefully consider the financial commitments before agreeing to participate. Key Responsibilities of Selected Delegates Successful applicants should be prepared to: Attend mandatory delegation activities from 8–12 March 2027. Cover all personal travel and accommodation expenses. Participate in relevant promotional activities, which may include interviews, photography, videography and social media content. Submit a 500-word report to SAEF by 10 April 2027. Complete the required donation before official INDIGO registration. Most public events are expected to take place during the first week, although delegates may choose to attend both weeks. How to Apply Interested applicants should complete the official online application form by 31 December 2026. The form requests basic personal information, age range, gender, telephone and WhatsApp numbers, visa status, LinkedIn profile, social media handles and previous UN conference experience. Applicants must also explain their background and motivation for joining the delegation in a statement of no more than 300 words. Before submitting the form, applicants should review the self-funding conditions, donation requirement, visa considerations and reporting obligations. They should provide accurate information and ensure that they can meet the mandatory dates. A strong motivation statement should describe relevant experience, the issues the applicant hopes to address through CSW71 and how participation could contribute to their future work. Candidates should also demonstrate a clear understanding of the delegation’s financial commitments and their responsibility to share outcomes through the required report. Why Consider This Opportunity? The SAEF delegation offers an opportunity to engage with international discussions on gender equality, develop advocacy networks and gain exposure to the United Nations policy environment. It may be particularly relevant to advocates, community leaders and individuals working in women’s empowerment and youth development.
