The Department of Psychology and Neuroscience at Duke University is inviting applications for a full-time Associate in Research position within the Identity and Diversity Lab. Location: Durham, North Carolina, USA Application Deadline: 1 June 2026 Priority Review Start: 31 March 2026 Employment Type: Full-time with benefits About the Research Lab The position is based in the Duke Identity and Diversity Lab, led by Sarah Gaither. The lab focuses on research exploring social identities, perceptions, and behavior, particularly among diverse populations, including children and underrepresented groups. The lab is currently involved in a National Science Foundation (NSF) CAREER grant, which investigates the development and adoption of multiple identity mindsets. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of how identity shapes cognition, behavior, and social interactions. Role Overview The Associate in Research will play a central role in managing and supporting the lab’s research programme. The position combines research coordination, data analysis, and administrative management, making it ideal for candidates seeking a comprehensive research experience. Key responsibilities include: Managing day-to-day lab operations, including participant recruitment Designing and conducting experimental studies with both children and adults Analyzing data and contributing to research outputs Supporting the administration of grant-funded research projects Coordinating lab activities and ensuring smooth operational workflows This role provides hands-on experience in both scientific research and lab management, offering valuable preparation for graduate study or research careers. Key Responsibilities The successful candidate will contribute across multiple areas: Research and Experimentation Design, implement, and analyze experiments Work with diverse participant groups, including children Use tools such as Qualtrics, SPSS, or R for data collection and analysis Lab Coordination and Supervision Oversee undergraduate research assistants, particularly from underrepresented backgrounds Provide training and mentorship to student researchers Support collaboration across lab members Administrative and Operational Support Maintain IRB protocols and compliance requirements Manage budgets and track expenses for internal and external grants Coordinate lab events, workshops, and speaker sessions Update lab website and assist with award applications Communication and Outreach Manage email correspondence efficiently Support internal and external communication efforts Assist in organizing academic and community engagement events Required Qualifications Applicants must meet the following criteria: Bachelor’s degree in Psychology or a related field At least one year of research experience, preferably involving children or underrepresented populations Strong organizational and multitasking abilities Excellent written and verbal communication skills Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities Preferred Skills and Experience While not mandatory, the following skills are highly desirable: Experience with survey and experimental platforms such as Qualtrics Proficiency in statistical analysis tools (SPSS or R) Familiarity with online recruitment platforms Basic skills in image or video editing software (e.g., Photoshop, Final Cut) Experience supporting diverse or interdisciplinary research teams Professional Development Opportunities This position is particularly well-suited for individuals planning to pursue graduate studies or long-term research careers.
