The role is targeted at qualified advocates with between two and four years of post-qualification experience and offers the chance to work on complex tax matters for high-profile local and international clients. About the Associate – Tax Position The successful candidate will join the firm’s growing Tax Practice and play a key role in advising clients on tax compliance, dispute resolution, corporate structuring, and regulatory matters. This position is ideal for a tax lawyer who possesses strong technical expertise, commercial awareness, and the ability to manage assignments independently. The role requires regular interaction with clients, regulatory authorities, and multidisciplinary legal teams while supporting complex domestic and international transactions. Key Responsibilities The Associate – Tax will be expected to contribute across several core areas of practice. Tax Dispute Resolution The successful candidate will represent and advise clients throughout the tax dispute process, including: • Managing disputes from audit and investigation stages. • Preparing objections and responses to tax assessments. • Representing clients before the Tax Appeals Tribunal. • Supporting litigation before superior courts where necessary. • Developing strategies to minimize tax exposure and protect client interests. Tax Advisory and Structuring The role includes providing legal and strategic tax advice across various tax categories and commercial transactions. Responsibilities include: • Preparing legal opinions on complex tax matters. • Advising on mergers and acquisitions. • Supporting corporate reorganizations and restructuring exercises. • Providing guidance on financing arrangements. • Advising on cross-border investments and transactions. Regulatory Engagement The Associate will serve as a key liaison between clients and regulatory authorities. This includes: • Engaging with the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA). • Assisting clients during tax audits and investigations. • Supporting negotiations and dispute resolution processes. • Ensuring compliance with changing regulatory requirements. Transaction Support The successful candidate will contribute to corporate and commercial transactions by: • Conducting tax due diligence reviews. • Performing tax health checks. • Reviewing share purchase agreements. • Reviewing business transfer agreements. • Identifying potential tax risks and liabilities. Knowledge Management and Research The role also involves maintaining awareness of evolving tax developments. Responsibilities include: • Monitoring changes in Kenyan tax legislation. • Tracking decisions from the Tax Appeals Tribunal and courts. • Following national budget developments. • Monitoring international tax treaty trends. • Preparing client alerts, legal updates, and internal knowledge resources. Required Skills and Experience DLA Piper Africa is seeking a highly motivated legal professional with a strong foundation in taxation and commercial law. Preferred competencies include: • Strong technical expertise across multiple tax disciplines. • Excellent legal research and analytical abilities. • Strong commercial and business awareness. • Ability to manage multiple assignments simultaneously. • Strong problem-solving and risk-identification skills. • Excellent communication and client relationship management skills. • Ability to collaborate effectively across multidisciplinary teams. Eligibility Requirements Applicants must meet the following minimum qualifications: • Bachelor of Laws (LLB) degree from a recognized university. • Professional qualification from the Kenya School of Law. • Admission as an Advocate of the High Court of Kenya. • Valid practicing certificate. • Two to four years of specialized tax experience gained in a top-tier law firm or a Big Four accounting firm.
