Dublin City University has announced a new postdoctoral research opportunity focused on climate, biodiversity, and value chain risk analysis as global institutions intensify efforts to address environmental and economic vulnerabilities linked to climate change. The position, titled Postdoctoral Researcher in Mapping, Assessing and Mitigating Climate and Biodiversity-Related Value Chain Risks, will be based within the university’s Business School under a 24-month fixed-term contract. The research initiative forms part of the ambitious Climate+ Biodiversity+ Water Co-Centre, a cross-border collaboration involving 14 higher education and research institutions across Ireland, Northern Ireland, and Great Britain. The project aims to develop advanced risk assessment tools capable of identifying environmental threats affecting critical supply chains and economic sectors. Research Project Targets Climate and Supply Chain Vulnerabilities The successful candidate will contribute to a major cross-institutional project examining how climate change, biodiversity loss, invasive species, and environmental degradation are impacting global and regional value chains. Researchers involved in the project will map risks across multiple sectors, including agrifood, energy, construction, and macrofinancial systems. The project also seeks to identify legal, policy, and financial interventions that can strengthen resilience and support sustainable transformation. According to the vacancy announcement, the research will contribute to the creation of dynamic risk dashboards, heatmaps, and live cross-industry indicators designed to support policymakers, businesses, and researchers in understanding emerging environmental threats. The Climate+ Biodiversity+ Water Co-Centre has positioned itself as a leading research platform focused on interconnected environmental challenges, combining expertise in climate science, biodiversity conservation, water systems, finance, and policy innovation. International Collaboration Driving Environmental Innovation The research programme is managed by Research Ireland in collaboration with Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs and UK Research and Innovation. Funding support is also being provided through the United Kingdom’s International Science Partnerships Fund and the Irish Government’s Shared Island initiative, reflecting growing international cooperation around climate resilience and sustainable economic planning. As governments and industries face mounting pressure to reduce environmental risks, demand for expertise in climate finance, sustainability analytics, and biodiversity governance continues to rise globally. Postdoctoral Researcher to Support Policy and Innovation The appointed researcher will work under the supervision of principal investigators and funded investigators while participating in a structured research and professional development programme at Dublin City University. Responsibilities will include conducting independent and collaborative research, contributing to academic publications, supporting grant applications, assisting with project financial management, and engaging in broader scholarly activities within the university. The role also offers opportunities to gain experience in postgraduate mentoring, research dissemination, project management, and conference presentations. Researchers will additionally work closely with master’s and PhD students, supporting academic development and contributing to interdisciplinary collaboration within the institution’s research environment. Strong Demand for Climate and Finance Expertise Applicants are required to hold a PhD qualification in Business or a related discipline, alongside demonstrated research competence and experience working within collaborative project teams. The university noted that candidates with expertise or research experience in climate, biodiversity, and finance will be particularly well positioned for the role. Additional competencies being assessed include research communication, grant-writing potential, leadership capabilities, and understanding of the broader research funding landscape. The role also requires successful candidates to complete mandatory compliance training in areas such as health and safety, data protection, cyber security awareness, and AI literacy. Growing Global Focus on Climate Risk Research The appointment reflects a broader global shift toward integrating environmental risk assessment into economic planning and financial decision-making. Climate-related disruptions, biodiversity decline, and ecological instability are increasingly being recognized as major threats to supply chains, investment systems, and economic resilience. Universities and research institutions worldwide are now expanding interdisciplinary programmes focused on climate governance, sustainability finance, and environmental innovation. Dublin City University, ranked among the world’s leading young universities, said the position aligns with its broader mission to address global challenges through research, innovation, and international collaboration. The salary for the postdoctoral role is listed at €46,805 under the IUA Postdoctoral Researcher Salary Scale. Applications for the position close on May 29, 2026.
