globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

August 31, 2026

Description

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has announced the opening of applications for the Young Graduates’ Professional Immersion Programme (YGP) 2027 Cohort, an initiative designed to improve youth employability, strengthen professional skills, and promote regional integration across West Africa. The programme provides young graduates from ECOWAS Member States with an opportunity to gain practical workplace experience within ECOWAS institutions, agencies, and designated partner locations while contributing to the implementation of regional development programmes. The 2027 cohort aims to address youth unemployment and under-employment challenges by bridging the gap between academic qualifications and workplace requirements through structured professional placements. Applications opened on 31 July 2026, and the deadline for submission is 31 August 2026 at 23:59 Nigerian Time (GMT+1). About the ECOWAS Young Graduates’ Professional Immersion Programme The Young Graduates’ Professional Immersion Programme is part of the broader ECOWAS Nnamdi Azikiwe Academic Mobility Programme (ENAAMS), which supports knowledge exchange, skills development, and mobility opportunities within the West African region. The initiative responds to challenges faced by many young graduates, including limited professional experience, skills gaps, and difficulties transitioning from education into employment. Through professional placements within ECOWAS institutions and agencies, participants gain exposure to regional governance processes, development programmes, and public service operations. The programme also seeks to create a network of young professionals who understand regional priorities and can contribute to strengthening cooperation among ECOWAS Member States. Objectives of the Programme The overall objective of the ECOWAS Young Graduates’ Professional Immersion Programme is to support the professional integration and employability of young graduates by providing them with practical experience and deeper knowledge of ECOWAS programmes. The specific objectives include: • Providing young graduates with a high-quality first professional work experience.• Strengthening technical competencies and soft skills.• Promoting regional integration and professional mobility among young people.• Improving the performance and effectiveness of host departments and agencies.• Developing a culture of regional public service through multicultural work environments.• Creating a network of young ECOWAS ambassadors committed to regional development. Expected Outcomes Through participation in the programme, selected graduates are expected to: • Gain valuable professional experience through direct involvement in ECOWAS programmes and activities.• Support the implementation and effectiveness of ECOWAS initiatives.• Develop stronger professional networks across West Africa.• Improve their understanding of regional cooperation and public administration. Eligibility Criteria The programme is open to young graduates who meet the following requirements: • Must be a citizen of an ECOWAS Member State, including Benin, Cape Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, The Gambia, Ghana, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, Liberia, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, or Togo.• Must be between 18 and 32 years old on the application closing date.• Must hold a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree, PhD, or equivalent qualification.• Must demonstrate proficiency in at least one official ECOWAS language. The official languages of ECOWAS are: • English.• French.• Portuguese. Applicants are required to have sufficient language ability to participate effectively in the programme and workplace environment. Programme Duration and Placement Structure The Young Graduates’ Professional Immersion Programme lasts for one year and is non-renewable. Key programme conditions include: • Duration: January to December 2027.• Maximum placement period: Twelve months.• Placement locations: ECOWAS institutions, agencies, permanent representations, or other locations designated by ECOWAS.• Participants will receive practical experience through assigned host organisations. Participants will undergo performance assessments during the programme, including mid-term and final evaluations. Each participant will be required to prepare and submit a report outlining their activities, achievements, and learning outcomes. Reports will be submitted to the Department of Human Development and Social Affairs (DHAS), the host department, and the participant. Mobility Opportunities The programme supports regional mobility by encouraging graduates to gain professional experience outside their home countries. A participant is considered to be on mobility when they leave their country of origin to undertake a placement in another ECOWAS Member State. Selected participants undertaking international placements may receive travel support, including a flight ticket from their country of origin to the country hosting the assigned institution. Selection Process For the 2027 cohort, ECOWAS has allocated 90 placement opportunities. The selection process will follow principles of: • Merit.• Fairness.• Transparency.• Equal opportunity. The selection stages include: • Online submission of applications through the official programme platform.• Assessment of applications by an ECOWAS Commission selection committee.• Institutional approval of shortlisted candidates.• Notification of successful applicants. Each applicant may apply for a maximum of two positions and is required to submit only one cover letter. Required Application Documents Applicants must submit the following documents: • Curriculum Vitae (CV) in PDF format.• Cover letter in PDF format.• National identity card or passport in PDF format.• Copies of academic certificates or equivalent qualifications in PDF format.
