The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNCHR) is a constitutional and independent National Human Rights Institution established under Article 59 of the Constitution of Kenya and the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights Act of 2011. Guided by the Paris Principles, the Commission promotes and protects human rights, monitors government actions, and advances Kenya’s transition toward a human-rights–respecting society. Its mandate is delivered through five directorates: Complaints and Investigations; Research, Advocacy and Outreach; Legal Services; Regional Services; and Corporate Services. Deputy Director – Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ECOSOC) Reference: KNCHR/ADM/DD, ECOSOC/01/12/2025Grade: KNCHR 3 / Job Group RContract: Five years, renewableDuty Station: Nairobi with occasional travelGross Salary: Kshs. 281,950 This role provides leadership in planning, conceptualizing and executing programmes aimed at advancing Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ECOSOC) across Kenya. The position heads the ECOSOC Division within the Directorate of Research, Advocacy and Outreach and ensures effective fulfilment of the Commission’s mandate on ECOSOC rights. Key responsibilities include leading strategy development, ensuring quality control of ECOSOC publications, overseeing implementation of rights-based initiatives, coordinating resources, building partnerships, preparing funding proposals, mentoring staff and supervising programme implementation. Eligibility and Minimum Requirements Master’s degree in Law, International Relations, Social Sciences or equivalent. Minimum eight years of relevant experience, including three at a senior supervisory level. Mandatory Strategic Leadership Development Programme certificate (minimum six weeks). Proven experience leading ECOSOC interventions and reviewing legislation and policy. Strong leadership, analytical, legal, communication, and project management skills. Excellent ICT proficiency. Deputy Director – Research and Compliance Reference: KNCHR/ADM/DDRC/02/12/2025Grade: KNCHR 3 / Job Group RContract: Five years, renewableDuty Station: Nairobi with occasional travelGross Salary: Kshs. 281,950 This position leads the Research and Compliance Division. It oversees development of research policies, coordinates monitoring of state compliance with human rights obligations, guides production of national and international human rights reports, and leads engagement with regional and global treaty bodies. Key responsibilities include reviewing legislation for human rights alignment, guiding development of monitoring tools, coordinating participation in treaty body processes, leading resource mobilization, managing divisional budgets and personnel, overseeing report preparation, and sustaining institutional partnerships. Eligibility and Minimum Requirements Master’s degree in Law, Social Sciences or related disciplines. At least eight years of relevant experience, including three at senior supervisory level. Strategic Leadership Development certificate (minimum six weeks). Demonstrated ability to lead research projects and prepare human rights reports. Strong data analysis, legal analysis, project management and stakeholder engagement skills. Excellent communication, organizational and ICT abilities. Must meet Chapter Six requirements. Senior Economic, Social and Cultural Rights (ECOSOC) Officer Reference: KNCHR/ADM/SECOSOCO/03/12/2025Contract: Permanent and pensionableDuty Station: Nairobi with occasional travelGross Salary: Kshs. 141,950 This role supports implementation of programmes advancing ECOSOC rights in Kenya. Duties include developing data collection tools, conducting research on emerging human rights issues, preparing human rights reports, monitoring ECOSOC rights, supporting participation in international human rights processes, mentoring junior staff, and preparing work plans and budgets. Eligibility and Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Law, International Relations, Social Sciences or related fields. Minimum three years of experience in a comparable position. Knowledge of human rights mechanisms and demonstrated experience handling human rights matters. Strong skills in research, data analysis and ICT. Ability to prepare reports and engage with stakeholders. Must meet Chapter Six requirements. Public Education and Training Officer Reference: KNCHR/ADM/PET/04/12/2025Grade: KNCHR 6Contract: Permanent and pensionableDuty Station: Nairobi with possible deployment to regional officesGross Salary: Kshs. 100,250 This role supports delivery of public education and training on human rights. Responsibilities include developing information and training materials, designing human rights curricula, organizing forums and workshops, creating public awareness messages for print and digital media, collecting feedback to assess human rights enjoyment, and preparing progress reports. The officer also supports quality assurance for training materials and assists in implementing public education projects. Eligibility and Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in Political Science, Sociology, Statistics or related Social Science fields. Minimum one year of relevant experience. Demonstrated experience conducting public training and awareness sessions. Ability to mobilize the public and develop educational messages for mainstream and social media. Strong facilitation, public speaking, communication and research skills. Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools. Must meet Chapter Six requirements.
