The global shift toward clean and renewable power presents a unique opening for Africa to harness its abundant natural resources and position itself as a leader in the global hydrogen economy. Recognizing this potential, the African Hydrogen Fellowship (AHF) has been launched to cultivate the next generation of African experts, innovators, and policymakers who will champion the hydrogen revolution across the continent. The AHF is a six-month professional fellowship designed to bridge the knowledge and skills gap in the rapidly evolving hydrogen energy sector. It aims to empower young African professionals, researchers, and entrepreneurs with advanced technical knowledge, practical experience, and strategic insights necessary to drive hydrogen innovation and adoption in Africa. Through a blend of theoretical learning, applied research, mentorship, and collaboration, the fellowship nurtures a new wave of leaders committed to advancing sustainable development and energy resilience across Africa. Program Objectives The African Hydrogen Fellowship is built around five core objectives that reflect the holistic approach needed to unlock Africa’s hydrogen potential: Develop Technical Expertise:Fellows will gain an in-depth understanding of hydrogen technologies and market dynamics. The curriculum covers hydrogen production processes such as electrolysis and reforming, storage and transportation solutions, safety systems, and end-use applications across sectors including industry, transport, and power generation. This technical foundation will equip participants to contribute meaningfully to research, innovation, and practical implementation of hydrogen solutions. Equip with Policy and Regulatory Knowledge:AHF emphasizes the importance of sound policy frameworks and enabling environments for the hydrogen economy to thrive. Fellows will explore policy design, investment models, regulatory mechanisms, and international best practices. They will learn how to engage with governments, regional bodies, and private investors to shape hydrogen strategies that support inclusive and sustainable energy transitions across Africa. Foster Innovation and Entrepreneurship:The fellowship inspires creativity and innovation by guiding participants through the process of designing and implementing hydrogen-based solutions. Fellows will apply their learning to address Africa’s unique energy challenges — from rural electrification and industrial decarbonization to sustainable mobility and green manufacturing. Entrepreneurial training will enable participants to identify market opportunities, build business cases, and develop scalable, impact-driven solutions. Build a Collaborative Network:Collaboration is at the heart of AHF. The fellowship connects emerging African hydrogen professionals with industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers through a dynamic network that extends across Africa and internationally. This network provides access to mentorship, research partnerships, funding opportunities, and career advancement pathways that endure beyond the fellowship period. Promote Real-World Application and Research:AHF goes beyond theory by integrating hands-on projects and case studies that simulate real-world scenarios. Fellows will engage in research and field activities designed to generate actionable insights and tangible outcomes. The fellowship culminates in a capstone project, where participants develop and present a comprehensive hydrogen initiative tailored to their country or regional context. Program Structure and Curriculum The African Hydrogen Fellowship runs over six months, combining online learning with in-person engagements and practical exposure. The program is divided into five key modules: Hydrogen Fundamentals and Production Technologies – Introduction to hydrogen science, electrolysis, renewable integration, and emerging production methods. Storage, Transport, and Infrastructure – Engineering and logistics of hydrogen storage, pipelines, and distribution systems. Hydrogen Markets, Policy, and Economics – Global and regional hydrogen market trends, investment models, regulatory frameworks, and policy design. Innovation and Entrepreneurship – Translating ideas into viable business ventures, project design, and innovation management in the clean energy sector. Sustainability, Safety, and Social Impact – Ensuring environmental integrity, operational safety, and equitable access to hydrogen benefits. The fellowship concludes with a capstone project where each participant applies the skills gained to design a solution addressing a specific hydrogen-related challenge in Africa. Fellows present their projects to a panel of experts from academia, industry, and policy sectors for feedback and potential collaboration or support. Learning Approach and Experience AHF employs a blended approach to learning, integrating interactive lectures, live seminars, group projects, and mentorship. Fellows participate in industry visits, policy dialogues, and case discussions with leading hydrogen experts and institutions. Mentorship is a cornerstone of the program — each fellow is paired with an experienced professional or academic mentor to provide personalized guidance, technical advice, and career support throughout the fellowship. The program also features opportunities for cross-country collaboration, enabling fellows from different regions of Africa to share insights and experiences. This pan-African learning environment fosters mutual understanding, cultural exchange, and long-term professional relationships. Expected Outcomes By the end of the six-month journey, fellows will: Demonstrate advanced technical and policy knowledge in hydrogen energy systems. Possess practical skills for project development, feasibility analysis, and implementation. Develop a strong understanding of Africa’s hydrogen potential and market landscape. Produce a publishable research or innovation project that contributes to hydrogen development in Africa. Join a growing network of hydrogen professionals committed to Africa’s sustainable energy transition. Graduates of the program will be recognized as African Hydrogen Fellows, forming part of an active alumni community that continues to collaborate, share knowledge, and influence the growth of hydrogen ecosystems across the continent. Eligibility and Target Audience The AHF welcomes applications from early- to mid-career professionals, researchers, engineers, scientists, policy analysts, and entrepreneurs with a demonstrated interest in renewable energy and sustainable technologies. Applicants should have at least a post-secondary qualification (e.g., bachelor’s degree or higher) and show commitment to applying their learning for real-world impact within Africa’s clean energy landscape.
