The Existential Risk Alliance (ERA) is inviting applications for four Research Manager positions supporting its internationally recognised programmes in frontier AI safety, AI governance, AI security, and biosecurity. Available Positions ERA is currently recruiting for four positions: ERA:AI Research Manager (Full-time) – Cambridge, UK ERA:AI Research Manager (Part-time) – Remote or Cambridge AIxBio Research Manager (Full-time) – Cambridge, UK AIxBio Research Manager (Part-time) – Remote or Cambridge Full-time positions offer salaries ranging from £60,000–£90,000, while part-time roles are paid on a pro-rated basis with flexibility for exceptional candidates. The preferred start date is 1 November 2026, although earlier starts may be possible. What Research Managers Do Research Managers provide the intellectual foundation of ERA’s programmes. Rather than serving purely administrative functions, they guide ambitious research, mentor early-career fellows, identify neglected research questions, and help translate complex ideas into rigorous, policy-relevant projects. Successful candidates will oversee portfolios of research projects while working closely with fellows, mentors, policymakers, technical researchers, and institutional partners. They will also contribute to ERA’s long-term strategy by identifying emerging priorities in AI safety, governance, verification, security, and biosecurity. The role combines research leadership, programme design, mentorship, community building, and strategic thinking within one of the fastest-evolving fields in technology governance. Eligibility and Candidate Profile ERA is interested in diverse candidate profiles and does not expect applicants to satisfy every listed criterion. Strong candidates are likely to demonstrate substantial expertise in either AI safety and governance or biosecurity, together with excellent research judgement and experience evaluating or conducting high-quality research. Applicants should possess outstanding written and verbal communication skills, strong organisational abilities, and the capacity to work independently within highly collaborative environments. For ERA:AI roles, experience in frontier AI, governance, alignment, control, verification, or technical AI policy is particularly valuable. For AIxBio roles, expertise in biosecurity, public health, biological risk, or related research areas is especially relevant.
