The European Union has launched the LIFE Programme 2026 Calls for Proposals, providing €601.5 million in funding to support innovative projects focused on environmental protection, climate action, clean energy transition, and sustainable economic development across Europe. Managed by the European Climate, Infrastructure and Environment Executive Agency (CINEA), the LIFE Programme aims to accelerate Europe’s green transition by supporting practical solutions that protect biodiversity, improve environmental quality, strengthen energy resilience, and advance climate neutrality. The 2026 funding round provides opportunities for organisations to transform innovative ideas into scalable solutions that contribute to a greener, more competitive, and resilient Europe. Funding Supports Europe’s Green Transition The LIFE 2026 Calls for Proposals have been launched during a period marked by energy challenges, geopolitical uncertainty, and increasing pressure to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. The programme supports European efforts to: Increase competitiveness through green innovation. Reduce strategic dependencies, particularly on fossil fuels. Accelerate decarbonisation of the economy. Strengthen energy system resilience. Support nature restoration and biodiversity conservation. Promote circular economy solutions. Improve resource efficiency and environmental protection. Through LIFE-funded projects, organisations can develop and implement solutions that move beyond research and pilot stages into practical applications with measurable environmental and economic benefits. Funding Areas Under the LIFE Programme 2026 The €601.5 million available through the 2026 calls will support several categories of environmental and climate initiatives. Funding allocations include: Standard Action Projects (SAPs) Nature and Biodiversity – €166 million Nature Governance – €7.5 million Circular Economy and Zero Pollution – €79 million Environmental Governance – €6.5 million Climate Change Adaptation – €28 million Climate Change Mitigation – €28 million Climate Governance – €4 million Other Projects and Clean Energy Transition Actions Clean Energy Transition – €85.5 million Specific Operating Grant Agreements for NGOs – €15 million Projects on Legislative and Policy Priorities – €18 million Strategic Nature and Integrated Projects Strategic Nature Projects – €75 million Strategic Integrated Environment Projects – €58 million Strategic Integrated Climate Projects – €30 million Technical Assistance Technical assistance for preparation of Strategic Integrated Projects and Strategic Nature Projects – €1 million Types of Projects Supported The LIFE Programme is seeking innovative projects that demonstrate strong potential to transition from testing and demonstration phases into long-term, cost-effective solutions. Eligible project ideas should contribute to areas such as: Protecting and restoring wildlife, biodiversity, and natural ecosystems. Promoting sustainable consumption and production practices. Supporting circular economy approaches. Reducing pollution and improving environmental quality. Developing climate adaptation solutions. Cutting greenhouse gas emissions. Increasing renewable energy deployment. Improving energy efficiency and energy system flexibility. Encouraging citizen participation in the clean energy transition. Projects should demonstrate measurable impact and the ability to create solutions that can be replicated or expanded across different regions. Eligible Applicants The LIFE Programme 2026 Calls for Proposals are open to legal entities established in European Union member states or countries associated with the LIFE Programme. Eligible applicants may include: Public organisations. Private companies. Research institutions. Non-governmental organisations. Other legally established entities. Applications may be submitted by: A single eligible organisation. A group of organisations working together through partnerships. Individuals are not eligible to apply directly for LIFE project grants. Applicants are advised to carefully review individual funding topics because eligibility requirements may differ depending on the specific project category. Application Deadline and Process The 2026 LIFE project proposals were launched on 21 April 2026. The main deadline for Standard Action Projects (SAPs) is: 22 September 2026 Deadlines for other project categories vary and applicants are encouraged to consult the official funding portal for specific submission dates. Applications must be submitted through the relevant European Commission funding platform, with applicants required to follow detailed guidance for each funding topic. Support Available for Applicants To assist potential applicants, the LIFE Programme will host online information sessions during the EU LIFE 2026 Info Days from 28 to 30 April 2026. The sessions will provide guidance on: Funding priorities. Application requirements. Proposal preparation. Tips for developing competitive applications. Applicants can also access support through LIFE National Contact Points and review previous successful LIFE projects for inspiration and guidance. About the LIFE Programme The LIFE Programme is the European Union’s dedicated funding instrument for environment and climate action. Since its establishment, it has supported thousands of projects focused on biodiversity protection, climate mitigation, environmental innovation, and clean energy development. With a total budget exceeding €5.4 billion for the 2021–2027 period, LIFE continues to support projects addressing major environmental challenges, including circular economy development, pollution reduction, climate resilience, and renewable energy transition. The 2025–2027 LIFE work programme provides an overall budget of approximately €2.3 billion for initiatives supporting Europe’s environmental and climate priorities.
