FLIGHT, a newly launched catalytic funding facility, is seeking an exceptional Executive Director to guide the organization through its foundational phase. Supported by an initial 35 million USD commitment from leading philanthropic partners, FLIGHT aims to shift how development is done in Africa by prioritizing government leadership, minimizing bureaucratic barriers, and focusing on measurable improvements in foundational learning for all children. This role offers a rare opportunity to build a significant institution from inception and shape an innovative, government-led model for educational development. FLIGHT’s Vision and Mission FLIGHT is designed to accelerate and scale foundational learning reforms across African countries by providing agile, responsive, and politically informed funding. Its model emphasizes country ownership, streamlined processes, and the removal of systemic and operational bottlenecks that often limit progress in education reform. By driving collaboration, learning, and adaptive implementation, FLIGHT seeks to support African governments in achieving meaningful and lasting improvements in learning outcomes. The Executive Director Role The Executive Director will be responsible for transforming FLIGHT from a bold concept into a fully operational, trusted, and effective institution. This leadership position requires shaping organizational governance, building strategic partnerships, and establishing processes that reflect FLIGHT’s core commitment to simplicity, speed, and government ownership. Key responsibilities include: Establishing and growing FLIGHT as a credible and high-performing institution. Building a mission-driven team capable of delivering results in complex environments. Securing resources, maintaining funder trust, and ensuring transparent stewardship of funds. Supporting early implementation in partner countries and removing political or operational roadblocks. Refining FLIGHT’s model for financing, co-design, adaptive learning, and streamlined reporting. Serving as the organization’s public representative with governments, funders, and global partners. Ideal Candidate Profile The ideal Executive Director is a strategic and entrepreneurial leader with deep experience in African education systems, development finance, large-scale delivery, or government reform. Candidates must be politically astute, capable of navigating complex ecosystems, and skilled at building trust with senior government officials. Additional attributes include: Demonstrated success in high-level leadership roles across the African continent. Strong understanding of policy, implementation challenges, and opportunities within public education systems. Ability to translate ideas into operational systems and tangible results. Excellent communication skills and the ability to represent FLIGHT on global platforms. A collaborative leadership style focused on empowerment, integrity, and shared ownership.This position is Africa-based and reports directly to the FLIGHT Board.
