The JAMS Foundation has announced plans to open applications for the 2027 Weinstein JAMS International Fellowship Program, a prestigious international fellowship initiative designed to support professionals working in alternative dispute resolution (ADR) around the world. The programme provides funding and professional development opportunities for individuals seeking to strengthen dispute resolution systems and practices in their home countries through exposure to ADR processes in the United States. Established in 2008, the Weinstein JAMS International Fellowship Program supports experienced legal and dispute resolution professionals from outside the United States who are committed to advancing mediation, arbitration, and other ADR mechanisms within their local and regional contexts. According to the JAMS Foundation, selected fellows may receive funding of up to $20,000 to support fellowship activities in the United States for periods ranging from one to four months. Fellowship Aims to Strengthen Global Alternative Dispute Resolution Systems The fellowship programme was created to expand access to dispute resolution education, training, and services internationally, particularly in countries where ADR systems are still developing or underutilized within litigation and judicial processes. The JAMS Foundation explained that the programme is designed to be flexible and encourages applicants to develop innovative fellowship proposals tailored to the needs of their home countries. Fellows are expected to study dispute resolution practices in the United States while exploring ways to adapt and implement effective ADR systems in their own jurisdictions. The programme particularly encourages applications from countries that do not yet have a well-established culture of using mediation, arbitration, or other ADR methods in court-related disputes. Fellows Will Observe ADR Practices in the United States As part of the fellowship experience, selected participants will spend time observing how JAMS administers and resolves disputes through ADR mechanisms. Depending on their proposed projects and professional interests, fellows may also participate in: University-based ADR programmes Graduate-level academic studies Research collaborations Institutional partnerships Informal professional exchanges Specialized dispute resolution training The foundation noted that fellows are strongly encouraged to independently research and establish affiliations with universities, organizations, or institutions in the United States before or during the application process. While the JAMS Foundation may assist with introductions where possible, applicants are responsible for arranging collaborations and institutional affiliations relevant to their fellowship goals. Fellowship Includes Annual Gathering in San Francisco Bay Area In addition to their professional and academic activities, all selected fellows are required to attend a week-long gathering in the San Francisco Bay Area during early September of their fellowship year. The annual gathering provides opportunities for networking, collaboration, and professional exchange among fellows from different countries and backgrounds working in the ADR field. Eligibility Criteria for the 2027 Fellowship The fellowship programme is open to qualified applicants from outside the United States who demonstrate strong experience and commitment to dispute resolution. To qualify, applicants must meet the following requirements: Must not be citizens of the United States Must be fluent in English Proposed fellowship activities must last between one and four months Fellowship funding can only support activities conducted in the United States The foundation stated that preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate the potential to improve dispute resolution systems or transform approaches to conflict resolution in their home countries.
