The Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty campaign has announced a new opportunity for communications professionals in Africa with the recruitment of an Africa Communications Consultant. The part-time consultancy seeks an experienced communications specialist to help strengthen regional advocacy and public engagement in support of a global transition away from fossil fuels. The remote position is open to candidates across Africa, with preference given to applicants based in Kenya. The consultancy will run from July 2026 through June 2027 and offers monthly compensation ranging from US$2,000 to US$2,500, depending on experience, location and agreed working hours. Supporting Climate Advocacy Across Africa Reporting to the Communications Director, the successful consultant will play a central role in expanding communications efforts that promote the proposed Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty across the African continent. Working closely with the Public Engagement Team and the Africa Regional Director, the consultant will help coordinate regional campaigns aimed at encouraging more African governments to publicly endorse the Treaty and advocate for a globally coordinated and just transition away from fossil fuels. The role also involves strengthening collaboration with a wide network of stakeholders, including governments, civil society organisations, youth groups, faith-based organisations, cities, influential public figures and other campaign partners. Key Responsibilities The Africa Communications Consultant will lead and support a variety of communications and media activities designed to increase awareness and engagement across the region. Core responsibilities include: Supporting regional public communications campaigns and digital engagement. Developing communication strategies for priority African countries. Creating press releases, briefing papers, talking points, newsletters and website content. Producing social media content, including graphics using Canva where possible. Coordinating traditional media and digital communications during major regional events and campaign milestones. Building relationships with journalists across print, broadcast and digital media. Monitoring, tracking and reporting regional media coverage. Strengthening relationships with partner organisations, campaign champions and influential supporters. Supporting engagement with Indigenous communities, youth organisations, artists, faith institutions, health sector organisations and broader civil society movements advocating for climate action. The consultant will contribute to ensuring consistent messaging while amplifying regional voices calling for ambitious climate policies. Required Qualifications The organisation is seeking applicants with substantial experience in communications and advocacy within the African context. Essential qualifications include: At least five years of professional communications campaign experience in Africa. Demonstrated expertise in social media management, digital content creation and media relations. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Strong organisational, problem-solving and multitasking abilities. Fluency in English. Experience working across diverse cultures with a strong understanding of decolonial approaches to communications and partnership building. Candidates should be comfortable working independently while collaborating with geographically dispersed teams. Preferred Skills and Experience While not mandatory, applicants with additional experience in the following areas will be viewed favourably: Climate or environmental non-profit communications. Event planning and management. Graphic design and multimedia production. Canva content creation. Video production. Digital analytics and campaign performance monitoring. Influencer engagement and partnership development. Experience working with international remote teams across multiple time zones. Fluency in French. These additional skills will support the campaign’s efforts to expand its reach across Africa’s diverse linguistic and cultural landscapes. Flexible Remote Consultancy The consultancy offers a flexible remote working arrangement, allowing professionals from across Africa to contribute to a high-profile international climate campaign while remaining based in their home countries. Some travel will be required to attend selected meetings and regional events in person. The successful consultant will work with an international team committed to accelerating global action on fossil fuel phase-out while promoting equitable and inclusive climate solutions.
