globalsouthopportunities.com

Application Deadline

August 22, 2026

Description

Applications are now open for the Frontier AI Security Residency (FASR) 2026, an intensive fully funded eight-week, in-person research and engineering programme designed to develop the next generation of experts tackling frontier artificial intelligence (AI) security challenges. Organised by ERA in partnership with Heron and the Oxford Hardware AI Governance Lab (Oxford HAIGL), the residency will bring together talented researchers, engineers, and technical professionals to work on high-impact cybersecurity and hardware verification projects in Cambridge, United Kingdom. The residency will run from October 12 to December 4, 2026, providing participants with mentorship from leading experts, access to a vibrant AI security community, and opportunities to contribute to one of the world’s fastest-growing research fields. Applications close on August 2, 2026. Addressing the Growing Challenge of Frontier AI Security As frontier AI models become increasingly powerful and widely deployed, concerns around cybersecurity, hardware verification, and AI system integrity continue to grow. While AI capabilities are advancing rapidly, the mechanisms needed to verify, secure, and monitor these systems have struggled to keep pace. The Frontier AI Security Residency has been established to address this gap by supporting individuals capable of developing practical solutions to some of the most pressing technical challenges facing advanced AI systems. The programme focuses on strengthening the security and verification infrastructure required to ensure frontier AI systems remain safe, reliable, and accountable as their capabilities continue to expand. Fully Funded Eight-Week Residency Successful applicants will participate in an immersive, in-person residency hosted in Cambridge, one of the world’s leading centres for artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and technology research. Programme details include: Programme dates: October 12 – December 4, 2026. Duration: Eight weeks. Location: Cambridge, United Kingdom. Funding: Fully funded. The residency enables participants to dedicate their full attention to research and engineering without the financial barriers often associated with intensive research programmes. Research Focus Residents will work on practical projects aimed at improving the security and verification of frontier AI systems. Key research areas include: Cybersecurity for frontier AI models and infrastructure. Hardware-enabled verification systems. AI compute verification. Secure AI deployment. Mechanisms that allow AI system claims to be independently verified. Security solutions for increasingly complex AI systems. Participants will contribute to solving real-world challenges rather than hypothetical research questions, helping shape the future of AI security. Mentorship from Leading Experts A core feature of the residency is direct mentorship from experts working across AI hardware, cybersecurity, and AI governance. Residents will collaborate closely with experienced mentors from leading research organisations and technical teams, receiving guidance on research design, engineering implementation, and project development. The programme also provides opportunities to engage with prominent researchers, policymakers, and practitioners through technical talks, seminars, and interactive discussions focused on frontier AI security. Collaborative Research Environment The residency places strong emphasis on collaboration and community-building. Participants will: Live and work alongside fellow residents. Join a cohort of researchers and engineers working on complementary challenges. Participate in spontaneous technical discussions and collaborative problem-solving. Engage with ERA’s wider network of partner organisations. Present research through poster sessions and receive feedback from mentors and technical experts. The programme is designed to foster long-term professional relationships that continue beyond the residency itself. Who Should Apply? The Frontier AI Security Residency is intended for individuals interested in advancing the field of AI security through technical research and engineering. The programme seeks applicants with interests in areas such as: Artificial intelligence security. Cybersecurity. Hardware security. AI verification. AI governance. Security engineering. Technical policy related to advanced AI. Researchers and engineers looking to contribute to an emerging field with significant global impact are encouraged to apply. Why Participate? The organisers describe frontier AI security as one of the most important and underexplored technical challenges in artificial intelligence today. By joining the residency, participants will have the opportunity to: Work on high-impact frontier AI security problems. Build expertise in an emerging technical field. Collaborate with internationally recognised mentors. Develop research and engineering outputs with practical applications. Expand professional networks across academia, industry, and policy. Help shape the future direction of AI security and verification. The programme provides an environment where participants can focus on solving meaningful technical challenges while contributing to safer AI development. Technical Partners The Frontier AI Security Residency is delivered by ERA in partnership with: Oxford Hardware AI Governance Lab (Oxford HAIGL). Heron. Together, these organisations aim to strengthen global expertise in AI security, hardware verification, and governance by supporting talented individuals working at the intersection of advanced AI and cybersecurity. Application Deadline Applications for the Frontier AI Security Residency 2026 are currently open. Key dates include: Application deadline: August 2, 2026 Residency dates: October 12 – December 4, 2026 Location: Cambridge, United Kingdom Funding: Fully funded Researchers, engineers, and technical professionals interested in securing the next generation of frontier AI systems are encouraged to submit their applications before the deadline and take advantage of this unique opportunity to contribute to one of the most consequential areas of modern technology.
