Apply Now for the Fully Funded Africa Climate Academy 2026 Global climate concerns have accelerated actions from governments, businesses, and international institutions to transition toward low-carbon energy systems. Countries around the world are now setting ambitious net-zero targets, while major oil companies are diversifying their strategies to transform from traditional fossil fuel producers into broader energy companies. These changes include increased research and development in renewable energy, hydrogen, and other alternative fuels. At the same time, investment trends are shifting significantly. Global financing is gradually moving away from fossil fuel projects and toward low-carbon technologies such as solar, wind, and energy storage. While these global efforts aim to address the climate crisis, significant knowledge gaps remain, particularly regarding how the energy transition will impact African economies and development priorities. Without the right information and strategic planning, it becomes difficult to engage policymakers, media professionals, civil society, and academia in meaningful conversations about the future of energy. This knowledge gap risks slowing down Africa’s transition from oil-centric development models to sustainable and diversified economic systems. Risks Africa Faces in the Global Energy Transition As the world moves toward cleaner energy, African countries—especially those dependent on oil and gas revenues—face several risks if they fail to adapt quickly and strategically. Delayed Policy AdoptionMany African nations risk falling behind if they delay implementing policies that support a just and inclusive energy transition. Without proactive strategies, the continent may struggle to benefit from the global shift toward renewable energy. Overreliance on Oil and Gas RevenuesSome governments may continue relying heavily on oil and gas income, assuming fossil fuels will remain economically dominant for decades. This approach could leave countries vulnerable as global demand for fossil fuels gradually declines. Limited Technological ParticipationAnother challenge lies in the lack of technological capacity to participate fully in the emerging clean energy economy. Without investments in research, innovation, and skills development, African countries may miss opportunities to benefit from new energy technologies. Risk of Stranded AssetsOil-rich African nations also face the possibility of stranded assets. As global markets shift away from fossil fuels, existing oil and gas reserves may lose economic value, reducing government revenues and impacting national economies. Opportunities Presented by the Energy Transition Despite these risks, the global energy transition also offers significant opportunities for African countries to accelerate development and reduce poverty. Investment in Clean Energy InnovationBy investing in research and development for renewable energy technologies, African nations can participate actively in the growing global green economy while improving energy access across the continent. Economic DiversificationCountries heavily dependent on oil and gas revenues can use current resources to invest in sustainable sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, and green industries, reducing long-term economic vulnerability. Development of Transition MineralsAfrica holds significant deposits of minerals critical to the energy transition, including lithium and silica sands. Responsible development of these resources could position the continent as a key supplier in global clean energy supply chains. Expanding Off-Grid Renewable EnergyRenewable off-grid solutions, such as solar mini-grids and standalone systems, provide an opportunity to accelerate electricity access in rural and underserved communities. Reducing Poverty Through Sustainable EnergyA well-managed transition can create jobs, improve energy access, and support inclusive economic growth, helping curb poverty across the continent. The Africa Climate Academy To help address the knowledge gap and foster informed discussions around climate change and energy transition, the Africa Climate Academy was established as a dedicated educational platform. The academy aims to transform the way climate change and energy transition are understood and discussed in Africa. It brings together policymakers, media professionals, civil society leaders, and academics to explore the risks associated with oil dependency and the opportunities presented by sustainable energy systems. The one-week program offers an immersive learning experience designed to challenge existing assumptions and encourage participants to rethink Africa’s energy future. Through a series of structured modules, participants engage with experts, case studies, and policy discussions focused on climate change, energy transition strategies, and Africa’s role in shaping a sustainable global energy system. Objectives of the Africa Climate Academy Reshaping Perceptions One of the academy’s primary goals is to challenge long-standing assumptions about the future of oil. Participants gain a deeper understanding of the risks associated with fossil fuel dependency and the urgency of transitioning toward renewable energy sources. Building Knowledge The program provides participants with comprehensive insights into the global energy landscape. It highlights Africa’s unique challenges and opportunities while sharing the latest developments in renewable energy technologies, policy frameworks, and industry best practices. Encouraging Collaboration The academy also serves as a platform for cross-sector collaboration. By bringing together stakeholders from government, media, civil society, and academia, the program encourages the exchange of ideas, experiences, and innovative solutions. Empowering Advocacy Participants are equipped with the knowledge and communication skills necessary to advocate for sustainable energy policies. The academy aims to empower graduates to become champions of climate action and renewable energy transition within their communities and professional networks. Fully Funded Participation The Africa Climate Academy is a fully funded program designed to remove financial barriers for selected participants. The funding package includes: Course Fees: Full coverage of tuition and all learning materials. Travel Expenses: Round-trip airfare for international participants and local ground transportation for all attendees. Accommodation: Comfortable lodging for the entire one-week program. Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner provided throughout the program. This comprehensive support allows participants to focus entirely on learning, collaboration, and meaningful engagement during the academy. Program Schedule and Location The upcoming Africa Climate Academy will take place in Accra, Ghana, offering an in-person learning experience for participants across the continent. Program Details Duration: 5 days Dates: 25–29 May 2026 Location: Accra, Ghana Format: In-person Participants are expected to arrive one day before the program begins and depart after the closing session. Additional logistical information will be shared with selected applicants. Driving Africa’s Sustainable Energy Future The Africa Climate Academy plays a vital role in shaping informed leaders who can guide the continent through the complexities of climate change and the global energy transition. By equipping key stakeholders with knowledge, networks, and practical insights, the academy contributes to building a resilient, sustainable, and inclusive energy future for Africa.
