UNU-WIDER and African Union Winter School on Public Finance 2026 in Ethiopia Organized by the United Nations University World Institute for Development Economics Research (UNU-WIDER) in partnership with the African Union, this prestigious programme aims to equip participants with practical analytical skills needed to address some of Africa’s most pressing fiscal and development challenges. African researchers, government analysts, and public policy professionals now have an exciting opportunity to strengthen their expertise in public finance, taxation, social protection, and development economics through the 2026 UNU-WIDER and African Union Winter School on Public Finance. Successful applicants will receive financial support covering travel, accommodation, and most meals during the in-person component in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. About the Winter School: UNU-WIDER and African Union Winter School on Public Finance 2026 in Ethiopia The Winter School is designed for researchers and policy analysts working on public finance and development issues across Africa. The programme combines advanced training in applied public economics with practical quantitative methods that participants can apply in their research and policy work. The course will be delivered in two phases: Online Methods Workshop Dates: 28–30 July 2026 Format: Virtual Focus: Research methods and analytical tools In-Person Winter School Dates: 14–18 September 2026 Location: Addis Ababa, Ethiopia Host: African Union Participants will engage directly with leading researchers from UNU-WIDER and internationally recognized experts in public finance and development economics. What Participants Will Learn The programme focuses on policy-relevant research and evidence-based decision-making in developing countries. Key topics include: Public Finance and Economic Development Domestic Revenue Mobilization Tax Evasion and Tax Enforcement Informality and Economic Growth Redistribution Policies Social Protection Systems Quantitative Research Methods Data Analysis for Public Policy Artificial Intelligence in Public Finance Research The training combines lectures, practical exercises, case studies, and collaborative learning opportunities designed to enhance participants’ analytical capabilities. Special Opportunity: SOUTHMOD at 10 Celebration An additional highlight of the programme is participation in the SOUTHMOD at 10 celebration, which will take place during the first day of the in-person Winter School.
