The European External Action Service (EEAS), through the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of South Africa, is offering funded traineeships for young graduates interested in international relations and diplomacy. This opportunity is designed for individuals eager to gain hands-on experience within a diplomatic mission and to understand how the European Union represents its interests and values in South Africa. Programme Overview The traineeship programme offers: A funded placement of up to 6 months in 2026 Placement within the Political, Press and Information Section (PPI) A tentative start date of June 2026 Location: Pretoria Trainees will actively contribute to strengthening EU–South Africa relations while collaborating across various sections within the EU Delegation. Key Responsibilities Selected trainees will support the delegation’s work through a variety of research, policy, and communication tasks, including: Analysing current and emerging dynamics in EU–South Africa partnerships Monitoring political developments and foreign affairs in South Africa Drafting political reports under staff supervision Conducting research on: Foreign affairs Domestic politics Human rights Compiling information on EU legislation relevant to South Africa Attending and reporting on: Public events Seminars and conferences Providing administrative support for: Public diplomacy events Official visits and engagements Supporting social media by drafting and proposing content Coordinating with EU Member States and reporting on meetings Managing alumni relations, including database updates and strategy support Eligibility Criteria To be considered, applicants must meet the following requirements: Must currently reside in South Africa Must have the right to work in South Africa or hold a valid work permit (proof required) Hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields: International Relations Law Politics Economics Social Sciences or related disciplines Demonstrate excellent English proficiency (written and spoken) Possess strong research and writing skills Be able to meet deadlines and work collaboratively Show motivation to learn and contribute to the EU Delegation’s work Additional Advantages While not mandatory, the following will strengthen an application: An additional academic qualification in another field Proficiency in multiple languages, including: South African official languages European Union official languages Application Process Candidates must submit their applications via email to:Delegation-s-africa-jobs@eeas.europa.eu Applications must include: A standard Europass CV (mandatory format) A cover letter explaining motivation for the traineeship A completed application form Applicants must use the subject line:“Funded Traineeship – PPI Section – EU Delegation to South Africa” Important Information Applicants are encouraged to carefully review eligibility criteria before applying.
