Location: Cape Town, South AfricaStart Date: 2 February 2026 Programme Overview Each year, the FW de Klerk Foundation offers a structured internship programme for students and recent graduates from South Africa and abroad. The programme provides interns with meaningful exposure to constitutional law advocacy, human rights research, and public policy analysis, while strengthening their research, analytical, and writing skills. The internship is primarily hosted within the Foundation’s Constitutional Rights Programme, with opportunities to engage in high-impact research, publications, conferences, and advocacy initiatives. Interns work closely with experienced researchers and legal professionals and contribute directly to the Foundation’s mission of promoting constitutional democracy, reconciliation, and unity in diversity in South Africa. Focus Area: Constitutional Rights Programme Interns placed within the Constitutional Rights Programme play an active role in the development of the Human Rights Report Card 2025, a flagship publication of the Foundation that assesses the state of constitutional rights in South Africa. Key Responsibilities and Duties Research and Analysis Interns are expected to support in-depth research activities, including: Collating the Foundation’s existing research, submissions, articles, and public statements related to specific constitutional rights. Conducting academic research using journals, books, and credible online databases. Researching relevant laws, court judgments, and constitutional jurisprudence. Analysing policy documents, government reports, parliamentary committee records, and parliamentary questions. Reviewing reports from intergovernmental organisations and non-governmental organisations on human rights issues in South Africa. Monitoring media coverage related to constitutional rights and reporting relevant developments to Foundation staff. Publications and Writing Writing is a core component of the internship, and interns are required to: Produce a minimum of two articles per month on topics related to the Foundation’s constitutional rights research. Select article topics in consultation with a Foundation supervisor, who provides editorial guidance and feedback. Optionally submit a legal case summary in place of one article, subject to approval. Support the drafting and editing of content related to ongoing research projects and advocacy initiatives. Events, Conferences, and Public Engagement Interns actively contribute to the organisation and delivery of high-profile Foundation events, including: Assisting with the planning and execution of the Human Rights Report Card 2025 launch, including: Event logistics Invitations and guest coordination Follow-up communications Presenting research findings at the launch event Supporting the organisation of the Annual Constitutional Rights Conference, held in Johannesburg in July, through: Logistical coordination Stakeholder communication Event administration and reporting Legislative Monitoring and Advocacy Support Interns are expected to engage with current legislative and policy developments by: Monitoring proposed legislation in Parliament as assigned by Foundation staff. Attending Portfolio Committee meetings where relevant. Conducting desktop research on current constitutional and governance-related topics. Supporting the Foundation’s engagement with civil society organisations on national developments affecting constitutional rights. Communications and Media Support Where relevant, interns may be requested to: Provide research-based information, written content, or video materials to the Marketing Manager. Support the promotion of Foundation activities and publications on social media platforms. Assist in amplifying advocacy messages through digital and public-facing channels. Administrative and Team Support In addition to research and writing, interns contribute to the smooth functioning of the Foundation by: Participating in general administrative tasks as required. Attending two weekly check-in meetings with a supervisor to provide progress updates and receive guidance. Supporting ad hoc projects or thematic work assigned during the internship period. Interns acknowledge that flexibility is essential, and they may be asked to assist with additional tasks aligned with the Foundation’s objectives.
